A brilliant feature of this year's Ascot is the Bilk contes, either in shot, soft silk, or in takota. and in any colour that one chooses to wear it. Bright crimson, emerald green, blue in any shado, sulphne colour, or beige and white, ware all to the fore on Tuesday. A white gown, much embroidered in cord and silke, with heade introduced here and there, had for companii ment one of these dainty little short cafe in Gobelin blue, exactly matching the eyes of the wearer, whose turbon of softest orèpe was most becoming. These short coats bave stright backs, but fit fairly closely to the figure in front, where they are generally trimmed with cord, embroidors, or a mingling of the inevitable bead and loss silks.-X. Mr. J. II. Arnald, U. S. Comal at Amoy, safe that contrary to the general understanding in the United States, the Chireno people do not depend upon rice as their main food. Millions in North Chins depend for their absistence al- most entirely upon wheat, supplemented with pens and beans.

Along the great western highway which traverses Shansi, Shensi and part of Szoshuan provinces are thousands of eating stalls, where food is sorred to myriads. For 1,000 miles over this great road, that is, until one is in Szechuan,

The three-flonate gown alluded to in last into the Royal enclosure at Asoct on was very much admired on a tall and beauti. ful woman. It took the form of white Chan tilly, arranged on a short skirt in flounces with scarcely any fullness, and some twelve or thirteen inches deep. With this was worn one of the new abawl-shaped capes in similar lage to that of the Perfootly flat at the back, it

On the plains of Honan foodstuffs produced in great abundance, wheat, bur- ley, beans, peas, sweet potatoos, rapessed, corn and a great variety of fruits; besides colon and homp; but the chief

grops tra host and cotton. Hozan is the obief wheat producing province of China. Its onoricous crop feeds its own wheat eating population of 36,000,000, besides contributing wheat to the mills of Shanghai and Houkow. The wheat is carried 1,200 miles by road.

In Central and Northern Shensi and in Shausi wheat is the main crop, often forty busbels to the aero being cultivated with great care, almost-inch by Incl. In Southern Shansi the opium poppy was formerly the most valu. able orop but last year wheat reigned supreme and the province produced the largest yield ever known, thirty-five to forty bushels to the

acre,

In June, 1910, wheat sold there at 25 to 30 cents a bushel and flour as retailing at three- fourths of a sant a pound. Much of this flour is ground in stone mills along the Fen river, operated by water power. Thore are probably 1,000 of these mills in Shansi.
