Mr. Montaga, Under-Secretary for India, replying to Colonel Yate, said that His Majesty's Government did not contemplate any redbetion of the British Forces in India, bat wern fully prepared to consider favourably say proposals the Indian Government might ind it to their power to make for affecting suck rend- justments in the Native units, with a view to conomy, as could be carried out without loss of efficiency to the Army in India as a whele.

Lord Haldane, speaking in London, said he regarded the past week with profound antis- the history faction. It would be memorable
of the Empire. As a result of the Conference with the Colonial Premiers they had come to a common conclusion regarding problems of defence which bail hitherto been dificult and obscure.
THE ADEN HINTERLAND
London, May 31st. In the House of Lords yesterday, Lord Lam ington enlled attention to the French railway projects at Sanan, and asked whether all idea of railway extension into the Aden Hinterland had been abandoned.
Earl Beanchump said it was the settled policy of Government to abstain from any extension of our responsibilities in the Aden Hinterland so long as the status quo was strictly observed by the Turkish Government. Any scheme of railway construction would be narrowly asruti- nised by them in the light of this policy.
Earl Beaucharap also explained the difenities which caused the delay in the dredging of Aden Harbont.

At the inquest on Sir William Gilbert it was stated that he and two ladies were bathing in a private swimming bath in his grounds. One lly got out of her depth, and Sir Willians went to her rescue. He wank while helping her to regain her footing. A verdict of heart failureo through over-exertion was returned.
The Coroner remarked that it was zu honour- able and to a great career.

Eentences of two years' imprisonment and a fine of a thousadi franes were paased en Maimon and Ronet, who were arrested on April 8th on a charge of purloining documents from the Quai D'Orsay.
The third scossed was sentenced to three months' imprisonment.

During the debate Mr. Boths claimed, as a sound principle, in the best, interests of the Empire, tlist any Dominion should be consulted before the Imperial Government concluded an Agreement with a foreign country affecting that Dominion. He believed the balance of ad rantage was in favour of the ratification of the Declaration, and argued that it would mean that when possible to import food-stuffs for the Union through Dehgon Bay, and also in neutral bottome, through most of the Union harbonra.
