Whow! but hasn't umor derelapot all at onde! After being treatel tes spell of fairly cool weather, we have been made to feel this last week as if we had been transplanted to a torrid zone: Cold drinks have been very much in de- mand, and the #istinabulation of the ice in the glass is one of the pleasantont sounds a man can hear these days. I have heard it said that this is the hottest Juns we have experienced for years. Personally, I forl inclized to believe it.

Those who witnessed the lawa tennis dual on the Hongkong Cricket Club on Thursday must bare resliced that the straggle in the fleros san, which was uncomfortable enough for the specta- torr, was a tent of Atmoss and endurance which faw would care to attempt. Both men played pluokily, but it was evidput that the strenuous exertion in ench intense host was telling upon them, and its ond must have been welcome for both. May a lady work for wagen! In Hongkong we know that she may not. Once she is known to earn her own living her social ambitions besome restricted, mil alin is denied the entrée to many high places which would otherwise be open to her. Of course it is snabbishnoss, British snobbishes, but wo seem to be content to accept it just as we do the heat and the mosquitoes. It is comforting to learn that even democratic America is just as anobbish in this respect as we are. A nurse at Washington attending a naval ball had her social statne indirectly questioned, and in consequeres the Secretary for the Navy is loving an uncomfort able time. Even Congress is being invited to take a band in the sotiloment, and the line of casto is to be definitely determined or entirely obliterated, It sounds all right, but I have an idos it is like kicking against the pricka."

THE VICEROY'S FATHER. Yosterday I mentioned in my report that the father of Viceroy Cheung had scoopted an Invitation to go to Shanghal to escape the summer heat. This does not appear to hos very serious matter, yet the editor of one of the local jourusis has seized on it and written ⋆ very violent article in which he blames the Viceroy and asks him to keep his father hero.

To bas written bis article under Ave headings (1) It is pointed out that the summer host anyone olm. (2) It is angge to that he is being removed not on account of the beat but on secount of impending riots. It is then pointed out that when the troubles were on many families wore removed and that the Viceroy by removing his caused much needless apprehension and excitement. (3) The article states that the Military Bureau, where the Vice- rog and his father are at prosent, is bountifully fitted up and has ample accommodation, and that it is useless to plead lack of space for allowing the older Cheung to depart. 4) The article then says that the unsettled atste of affairs is by no means over and that all officials should do thair atmost to allay excitement by keeping their families in the City. If they neglect to do so they Indirectly causa excitament. (5) The editor concludes with the remark that it in very suggestive that he should wish to depart just at this time when there is so much trouble about the bank-noter. Whether HE. bus, or

has not, any ulterior motive in wishing his father out of the province is hard to say, bat the above-mentioned article makes it sbund-

antly plain that the pablis is inclined to think there will be more trouble here before long. Just noW there is a great deal of queasiness owing to the railway quession aud the unfortunate bank-nate episode, · Ramonra are rite to the effect that the Hunanase bave rebelled and base destroyed a large section of tho Kine, and that the Viceroy of the two Ha provincen har boen assassinated. Owing to the censorship there are no telegrams or articles on the railway published in the local papera, and it may be that this lack of news has resulted in the goussis of the rumours.

BUMOURED BESIGNATION OF THE VICEROY It is reported in official oircles that: H. E. Cheang has memorialised the Throno begging. to be relieved of his duties as Viceroy of the Leung Kwong. His request has not ben granted, but it is mil a period of leave of absence will be given to him.
