GLASGOW EXHIBITION..

HEILLIANT OPESING BY DUKE OF CONNAUGHT

The National Scottish Exhibition, at Kelvin Grove Park, was opened on May 3rd by H.E.A. the Duke of Cannaught.

The Duke and Duchess, who had been staying at Dalzell Castle as the guests of Lord Hamilton, arrived at the Contral Stationsson after 11, and drove through the streets in a closed carriage to St. Andrew's Hall, where a civic reception was accorded them, and the freedom of the city bestowed upon his Royal Highness. Then the procession wound through the streets to the City. Chambers, where luncheon was served.

Dolay unusual on such occasions marked the programme at this point, and it was nearly an hour after the appointed time when the Royal party reached the exhibition. Happily the rain kad ceared, and the progress through the streets 10 Kelvin Grove, amid the music of the

pipes and the military bands, we sccomplished in bright sunshine, n bappy omen for the pros. perity of the enterprise to be inaugurated.

The Duke and Duchers were conducted to the Palace of Music, a fino hall capable of seat- ing 3.000 people. There a gathering of dukes 241.252.34 and duchesses, earls and countessos, generals and professors, in uniforms and robes, hail for some time awaited the coming of the Royal guests. The hour's delay prove irkeome, and there were occasionally such murmurs of impe tience as one hears in a theatre when an inter- val is unduly prolonged.

There

was, bowever, no mistaking the heartiness of the cheers when the Marquis of Tullibardino

appeared, s fine figure in full Highland. costome of Athol Tartan, his breast glittering with war medals and decorations, escorting the Duko, in the undress uniform of 125,319.41

After prayer, the Marquis of Tullibardine read an address,

a, reciting the history and objects of the exhibition, and expressing the loyalty of Scotland to the Royal house as represented by his Royal Highness, All the speeches made reference to the Duke's happy influence in South Africa during his late tour, and expressed cordial enticipations of brilliant results from his coming mission to Canada..

The Imperial note was evidently mach sppreciated by his Royal Highness, and the Duchess could not conceal the emotions aroused. by the anthurium with which the Duke's sentiments of devotion to the Empire were received.

A beautiful silver statue of a piper of the Scots Guards, of which regiment his Royal Highness was colonel for 21 years, was pre- sented by Mr. Pettigrew, chairman of the executive committee, and was accepted with emiles of satisfaction, the Duke declaring it. to be not only a delightful souvenir of his visit, bat a leveling memorial of his loog association with the splendid regiment.

After the exhibition had been declared open there was a irving moment when the noble strains of the Hundredth Palm mng throngh the hall and then the Royal guests went on a tour of inspection of the various sections of the exhibition, and took ten in the Garden Club.
