When "Only Middling"
your health is very far from. satisfactory. The slightest knowledge of pathological science is sufficient to inform us how precarious is the con dition of the person who is "only middling." The power of disease-resistance is practically nil,& an ordinary atmospheric change or dietetic irregularity may lay you up for weeks.
Take
care therefore that you possess nothing less than vigorous, robust health. Just as nothing succeeds like Success so there is no better guarantee of sus tained health than never to let yourself run down. REVIEW.
The Diseases of Chiva. By W. Hamilton JEFFERYA, M.D., and L. L. Morwell, M.D., F.R.C.P. Philadelphia: Blakiston.
The literatura of Tropical Diseases in grow. ing with a rapidity which almost muskus 'oue despair of being able to overtake it. The field is so wide and so profitable," the-workers -so- zinmerous and so enthusiastic that we cannot wonder at pdhje, literally, tremendous output, eron it, we have to qualify that wander by tho matisfaction that's misch of it is ophomoral! And unfortunately no country has a mon opoly of diseases, whether that country Ivy in the tropical zone For in the temperata zono-discasos present-in-one-part-of- a particular zone din generally be found in distant parts East or Wost of that zone. Çarəftil enquiry ku shown diseases present in a "country" which way at one time thought to be "free of thein-for instance, lut:ly, Yellow Fever found to be endemic in the West Coast of "Africa," though not raceguised as such, apparently magnorading under other patues. And in these days of travol and comero dixonnes are carried from their homo, and

the way Plague came out of Younau, tarried while among us, and has now taken up its "home in India. Se that the unit of Tropical Disease, is important and should be widespread, for they are apt to suck fresh lands and come within the kan of the woryday medical practitioner in some singe of their history, and who so gosti into the Uttermost parts of the earth if he be a Garoful investigator will find bis 1bour rewarded. The justruction given now-a-days in the Schools of Tropical Medicios ought to fit a ma to con I duet & vertain amount of research and investiga- tion if he were not unduly hampered, and a look like the one before us, "Tho Diseases of Chius," should undoubtedly be a sade mecum of uch aisance and beneft to the medical man who carries on his work in the Middle Kingdom, The work in got up in handsome and attractive form and is a moviment to the industry and equaciontious work of the authors, who have set Cavexample of diligence and a-al which should be a pattern to modicul men working in tropical fields. Na'rully this book is not expected to take thy place of the established text books of Tropicali Disease, it is rather a summary of the diseases which are presilout in these latitudes, and Claserpently the authors merely sketch them, leaving the faller and tiers detailed description fu thyrarecgniau toit books”

The opening chapter dealt with modera sciontille practice in China and con. trots it with the old empirical practice, "The successful practitioners who give the best practice, by w moun the fullest equipment of scientifo training and skill, devoted, with courage and toudernes, not altimately to the making of "u exact terminological diagnosis, but to the relief and are of the man." This is the text of the| authors, and that it is the guiding principle of medical men is proved by the yearly increasing number of natives who seek the benefits of: Western metho of treatment. A Nosp. geography of the diseases of China forms na interesting chapter, giving the various diseases which are found in this vast country, which bears out our contention that all countries have most disposes in common, though the authors declare that, they believe the future holds out along these lines some. tremendously interesting folds for observation and the basis of studies which will prove them ́selves of inestimable value to the hnamn race!
--which indeed may be said of the study of “dissuse in every elimo:
A large part of the book is taken up with a de- spription of various gesoral diseases, skotohy but soccint and accurate. An interesting chapter is devoted to the opium habit-the habit which ju the opinion of the late Dr. Ayres, the Celozial Surgeon hero, is "perfectly harmless in itel "but which a uniber of fanatiesaid extremista havo endowed with every possible harm and danger. There is no doubt that in excuss it cansos de- rangement of the digestiva fanetions and conse- quent einaciation and dobility whifok may net as predisposing cause of disease, but that is only when it le taken in excess. It is diffeatt to see what harm is done by the small doses generally consumed which soothe the mind and ease the resting hours of the hard toilor, and give him that mental, satisfaction that other nativos seek in alcohol with
ach distrous resplis. The probibition of opium will drive the native to alcobol and will create a worse economic condition. In Hong- kong, if report be belisted, indulgence in alcohol is becoming more widespread among the Chiness, and we shall have an instructive object lesson of the results of enforcing a code of morality by legal measures.
The volume concludes with an interesting chapter on Iospital construation in China. illustrated by plans, and un apendix on Laboratory methods both of those will be of much use. The flestrations are numerous and clear, the microphotographs of parasitas ure', 'quite new and are the work of Dr. Bell, of Hongkong, and Fleet Surgova Sutton, R.N., arid reflect credit on them.
To the practitioner in China. this book will undoubtedly be of much bonefit and assistance, especially if he is stationed in dix unt and remote parts, for it brings within convoint compass au account of recent work in tropical pathology.

HERPIOIDE
"I am sending you my photograph to show what Nowbro's Horpioide has done for me. Sines I first tried Herpicide upon my hair I have used it exclusively in giving scalp treatments to others, and I would not think of trying to get along without it."
(Signed) Mas, ANNA CONNER.
2807 Archer Avo., (hicago, Ill.
Hondreds of Lady salp specialists and hair dressera neo and recommend Newbro's Herpicide, instead of products of their own manɛfucture upon which a much larger profit could be made. They claim that Hergjelde inakes friends for them and gives much better satisfaction. Some hair dressers use Herpickle for obstinate cases. only, but why not use the best first?
Herpicide is a delightful dressing that can be used when there is no disease of the hair or scalp, and as an actual remedy for dandruff, iching scalp and falling hair it stands in a class singularly its own.
Many ladies object to agummy and atloky hair dressing, or one that is full of sedimentary chemicals intended to dye the hair. The marked preference for a clean and dainty preparation, particularly one that overcomes excessive oiliness and leaves the hair light and fluffy, is reflected in the enormous rate of Newbro's Herpicide. Discriminating ladies becons enthusiastic over its refreshing quality and exquisite fragrance. It stops itching of the scalp almost instantly,
