EXPLORER'S FEAT.
PENETRATING TO THE HEART OF NEW GUINEA,
The journey of exploration through the in- borior of New Guinea undertaken by the Ger mana scholar and explorer Dr. Max Moszkowski, with the support, of the Royal Museums in Berlin and the Dutch Government, has ouded most successfully. After a year's absence Dr. Moszkowski hus rotarned home with a rich collection of data and material, which will add greatly to the knowledge of New Gainen's ethnological, geographical, and zoological con.
ditions.
The expedition, which was formed for the or ploration of the basin of the Mamberamo, the principal virer in North New Guinen, was, con- trary to the grant Duich ex, edition which visited this territory a few years ago, kopt down to the lowest possible number of members. Dr. Moszkowski was accompanied by only European scientific assistant and by five Sum atrans, three of whom trivelled with him on his previous journey through Central Sumatra. The very fact that he had fewer people to provids! for enabled Dr. Muszkowski to penetrata sur- ther than any European had ever dona bafore.
He reached a point more than 300 miles from the mouth of the Mamberamo, in the heart of the mountains of cohtral Now Guines.
FRIENDLY CANNIBALS. With the cannibale whom he met on his journey he succeeded in establishing the frised liest relations, and did not find it necessary to fire a single shot. In return for numerons gifts be persundel them to provide him willingly with shelter and nourishment for his party. He even secured phonographio records of their songs and several hundred photographs, which he has brought book with him, showing the Pap in their every-day life and habits..
Bori-Deri, the malignant plagao which worked such havoc among the members of the Dutch expedition in the same district, did not touch Dr. Bloszkowelci's party. Dr. Moszkowski succooded in confirmlug the already suspected fact that the prevalence of bari-beri is a realt of excessive consumption of rice. The coloured members of his party were therefore only given rice in a specially prepared condition.
Ferer and dysentery, which are usually so provalent among the black carriers and aborig ines, were also combated with great suoress, and the expedition was almost entirely froo from thes troubles. Dr. Moszkowski brought every member of his party, hate and well out of the interior, and he himself did not suffer one sing. le Jay's illness during the whole journey.
A GREAT MISFORTUNG,
A piece of great misfortune befell the expodi- tion towards the end of Darambar, their lease- boat being lost while passing the rapids of the Mamborano. With a grost Paparan carion as their craft, however, they proceed up the Mamberamo until further navigation was absolutely impossible. Then, accompanied by one Papuan and two of his Sumatrans, Di. Moszkowski made a dash for the very source of the mighty stream, and from there to the principul peak of the Central Mountains
On Christmas Eve of last year he camped ot the foot of the highest peak in the range. Ha even made an attempt to ascend it, but was compelled by his lack of ammunition and stores to abandon the project aud to start on the return journey.
