THE BRITISH BIBLE.
TERCENTENARY OF THE AUTHORISED VERSION,
Three hundred years ago there issued fo the press a book which was destined to beco a pricoloss national possession of the English- spanking race. We refer, it need hardly be anid, to the Authorised Version of the Bible, which was prepared under the direction of that tigh and Mighty Prince, Famas, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, &o." Modorn historians are apt to speak in less courtly language of our, Bret Stuart King, bat in this one respect at least we all unquestionably owe him a debt of grati tale, Not only did the noble Authorised Version give an impeter to the study of the Holy Scriptores but it is the pare which well of English undofiled from

writers, and greatest posts, prose omtors have found unfailing inspiration. Naturally the occurrence of this interesting Tercentenary is not to go unnoticed, and already alaborate preparatione are being made in the most important countries where the English language is spoken to celebrate it in a fitting INNOг. At the British Musout there will be a special exhibition illustrative of the history and development of the British Bible. deputation of representative men of all denomina tions will wait on King George on a date that has yet to be fixed in order to secure bis Majesty's co-operation in the matter, and on March 29 there will be a domonstration at the Royal Albert Hall.

these will be placed alongside the copies of the Bible to which they refer. Under my supervision a guide is being prepared similar to that which wo published in connection with the Naval Exhibition which we organised on the occasion of the centenary of Nelson's death in 1905. It will be illustrated with facsimiles of illustrations and title pages, and will form in itself a comprehensive history of the English Bible. It is not quite certain as yet what the price will be, although I strongly incline to the popular sixpence, which was the price of our Naval Exhibition catalogus. I should ike to place it within the reach of all poor as well as rich, but it may be necessary to make the charge somewhat higher. The reason is that we may have to adopt a grarto size Instead of an otavo in order better to display the facsimiles of the title pages of the more impor- tant Bible editions."
Provided that they shall respectively at my death be profossing the Jewish religion and not be married to a person not profes- sing the Jewish religion.
In another part of his will he states:
I declare it to be my earnest wish and solemn jojunction that no child of mine shall at any time or under any circumstances abandon the Jewish religion or inter-marry with a person not professing the Jewish religion. These views on religion enter into even a business arrangement with his son Lionel, for he says that having advanced to his son £45,000 for the firm of A. Keyser & Co., he directed that bis trantes should not require repayment of this sum, but should allow it to be taken on account of his son's share in his resionary estate, only if my said son shall at may death be profess. ing the Jewish religion and shall not be married to a parsou not professing the Jewish religion."
DAUGHTERS AND "LIBERAL JUDAFȄ." His strong views upon orthodoxy also find expression in the second ecdieil to his will, in which his daughters are to lose three-fourths of their interest if they infringe his views on the matter.
This clause reads:-
Dr. Kenyon, who, as is well known, is one of the greatest authorities or our English Bible, is enthusiastic in bis praises of its merits as a mers monument of the English language at its very best. He does not think that the revisers of King James's time purposely adopted a style that was antiquated in their day, as some writers have suggested. TRIUMPH OF THE AUTHORISED VERSION. "Anyhow, it is clear that the Authorised Ver. sion won its way by sheer merit and thus gradu ally displiced even the Geneva Bible, which had proviously stood high in popular estimation. In fact in remained without a rival from the middle of the Boventeenth Century until the appearance of the Revised Vernon in 1881-5, The standard of scholarship early in the Seven- teenth Century was fairly high. The revisers at that period, however, had not some of the materiale that are a essible to present-day sololars. Early tests are now available that were then unknown. Still, with all its faults, the version which inspired Paradise Lost, and Pilgrim's Progrees holds the first place in the affections of the English people. The revisers of thirty years ago treated the tert on but they made the whole with respect,

The late Mr. Spurgeon, who had a wonderful knack of hitting the right nail on the head, said that the revisers understood Greek and Hebrew bat that they did not understand English. I know this, that out 120 Bibles issued by this society 19 are the old Authorised Version. It is tree that we supply in the main only poor people, our Bibles being pablished under cost price. What the true pro- portion may be of the sales of the two versions among all classes of the community it is o tremely difficult to say. I think there ren be no doubt, however, that the Authorised Version iront and away the more in denund. At first, when the Rovised Version appeared, people rished to buy it in order to ind out in what respect it differed from the Bible with which they had been familiar all-their lives, but that in a long time ago, and I very much doubt whether on the whole the University Prase have found the sale as large as they expected it to be
