RUBBER SHARE VALUES. The following letter was recently published in tho Zémes in

Sir,Owing to my absenes from London I unfortunately failed to Bes the calculation of rabbor share values supplied to you by a cor respondent and published in your Financial Supplement of January 6 until recently, or I would have asked you earlier to faveur me by printing a criticism of the figures in question,

Your correspondent correctly enough assumes that in the course of time the price of rubber will fall to a level which will only provide a small portion of the profit now derived from an aura of planted rubber,

ing

:

Ho then suggests a price of 18. 6d, a lb. probablo contingency in the. neer future, and, by assuming that the big producers, ar now only earning 100

per cent, to 300 per cent. upon their par valnes (instead of 200 to 500 per cent., as they are actually earning), he arrives at the figure of £150 as an ample valuation for a planted acre of rubber.

working at a loss of anything up to 25 per cent. and oxhaustion pre taking further toll of the ar 50 per cent, of their capital, while depreciation capital value.

established for the equalization of dividends The suggestion that reserve funds should be would, I believe, mant with the opposition of the majority of shareholders in rubber companies. Knowing that their capital invested in rabber will yield them 12 to 15 per cent, and offord other than rabbur, yislding a dividend in them greater soority than any investment, excess of 6 per cent, it is natural that these shareholders should object to the profits of their companies being withheld for investment by the debarred from the purchase of rabber shares. directors, who, it may be assumed, would be

All will agree that a rawrro, fund equivalent to the total capital of the company is desirabla, not only in rubber, but in all other companios, and a very fair start has already been made by the best companies, but I trust und believe the view that appropriations to roservo should bo proportionate to the dividends will not meet This sum certainly represents a generous its favour would seem to be that rubber shares with general support as the only arzument in va no for an estate having no rubber over three would then afford a more attractive security for years of age, but the following ressone show those who know nothing about the value of the why it should not be taken as remotely repre-property of the company, I am, faithfally senting the value of any of the big producers.

I show in the following table the amounts of rabber that will certainly be produced during the next five yours by several of the well-known companies and the planted nereage of the properties; ➡

Even though then will be practically no rabbor on the markot during the next five years from areas not yet plantes, it is still impossible to do more than guess at the actual price that will obtain during this period. Having sought the views of rabber manufacturers and others in the trade, I have found the opinion is strongly hold that the average price during the next fire years will not be below 3. 6d. but

The cost of production of the older estates does not new exceed 6d, a lb. when the necessary alterations in eust are made for ad valorent charges.

The ad valorem charges, including the buyer's discount of 25 per cent., will be reduen by about 4d. alb. when rubber is of the value of 3s. 62., ay compared with those charges when rubber is at 2s. 6d. Another point to which your correspon dcat's attention should be drawn in this con- rection is that, so far from the cost of production rising owing to increased labour costs, the cost of production on the older estates has alceudly fallen from 18, 6d, to 10d., in spite of increased trages, Supposing an increase of wages amounting to 33 per cent. were to be grinted on an estate entirely composed of 10 years old rubber, the cast of col- lection would still be about one-half the cost of collection on the same estate when it was five years old, owing to the fact that the yield of the old trees is at least four times a great and, rougly speaking, a escliu can tap as many old as young trees. An increase of 33 por cont, in wages would to sufficient to attract literally tens of thousands of Chinem coolies from other industries to the rubber estates.

I

now give a tabe showing the profts that will be earned by the estatos I have named during the next five years and the value of these estates if eilculated on the basis aug- gested by your correspondent Prost during

ve years, taking net Company profit porib, at 5s.

do not wish to be held responsible for these. figures of estimated profts, is I am quite on- fident that they will be enormously excordeit though not so largely as wero sil one figures of five years ago with regard to probable outputs. and prices during the past five years.

If we cast usilo all make-believe" and base our figures on actual experience (which shows us that every acre of rubber of nine years of age produces at least 80lb. of rubber), and if we take the average output of an sere from its tenth till its seventeenth year at 1,000lb. a year, we will find that the fair price for an acre of rubber on a seven years' purchase basis would be £855, even if the averag price realized did not exceed Ja, alt. It is on this gars that I would prefer to be judged by the light of later or perience. Your correspondent expresses denbts as to the possibility of rubber boing largely used for paving unless the cost falls below 18. 60. Inquiries in the United States convinced below a dollar a lb. Batoro, Lowever, suy vast me that rubber paving will be adopted largely as soon as robber reaches permanently any price inersuse iu demand takes place manufacturers must be convinced that the price is not to be eubject to quick and large fluctuations I am. convinced that if the world's supply of rubber. could be suddenly and permanently increased from 85,000 to 200,000 tons in the course of this year, the average price next year would not be much below 3s, whereas in existing senilitions, and so long as the supply of rublier is so corn. paratively insufficient for all needs as to lead itself to manipulation, the sudden disclosure of 10,000 tons of hidden stocks would paralyse the market for mouths,

......

I would mention that all of my remarks on, the production and costs of estates are intended to apply only to properties in the Federated Malay States, and not even to estates in Province. Wellestay or Malacca Though there are doubt. less many valuable estutes in the Straits Settle- ments and in Ceyler, I am not in a position to speak from asteal experience of their results and prospects.

While expressing my belief that the profits earned by leading rubber companies will admit of hugo dividende being paid, in addition to large appropriations being made on account of reserve funds, I am far from agreeing with your correspondent's contastion that enormous reserve fands should be established by rubber companies.

In the first place, even the oldest companies aro now only producing a fraction-from half to a touth of the rabber that they will be producing in a few years, and only by ignoring the opinion of those best qualified to judge can we suppose that the price of rabber will fall as quickly as the production of individual estates will increase It must also be remembered that the cost of maintaining an estate which is not producing rubber is almost negligible. Should it be de- cided, for instance, from salert-sighted policy, tá reduce the shipments of rabber to enable the consumption to overtake the supply, it wanld- only be necessary to provide for the cost of weeding and of olearing the drains, the salary of a European caretaker, and the rent on some of the oldest and most valuable estates; this would amount only to about & per cent. per annum of their capital. Such estates as Selangor and Pataling could cause all pro duction for five years, and only incur an expenditure for those les veus of a few thousand pounds. At the end of that time they would be capable of yielding for mo e rubber and at less cast per lb. than previously

In this respect the requirements of a reserve fund are much less than in the case of mines and L industrial companies that may in bad years be

SEA TRAGEDY.

LARGE STEAMER ENGULYED BY HUGE WAVE,

A dramatic story of the son is contained in the report of the captain of the Russian steamor Borjom, which resently arrived at Batom from Constantinople

From this it appoura that the captain and orew of the boripa wore the eye-wituricos of a large steamer being suddenly engulfed by a heavy sea and sinking immediately.

PLAIN FACTS ABOUT THE HAIR

IT IS THE DOTY of every one who is lateroated in hair préservation to loare enough about the subject to tell whether an advertisement for a hair remedy is reasonable or unreason- able: In this connection, the United States Post Office Department has began a much needed campaign against falsɔ and misleading statements in advertisements in general. While this work is highly commendable and should be greatly sxtended, still at the same time it tends to paternalism rather than to personal relf-reliance: If YOU know that the claims for a hair remedy are unreasonable and untrue, that knowledge will save you money and prevent disappointment.

TAK TROUBLE LIES in the fast that certain over ambitions Proprietors employ advertising writers who do not know the composition of the remedies they write about, and even if they did, they are not expected to know the therapeutic ution of the various ingredients. Two very familiar and oft repeated state- ments are, that the hair must be watered and fed just like a plant, and that the colour of the hair, once dostroyed, can be, restored, by natural process. While both of these statements are false. In every particular, it requires some little knowledge of the hair follicle to understand why the statements are falsa,

THE HAIE FOLLICLE is a pear shapod sack in the scalp that holds the hair root. At the bottom of the hair follicle anil extending up into it for a short distance is a nipple shaped projection that remains in the scalp rhon a hair root is forcibly pulled oat. This projection is the hair papilla from which the hair "root" grows. The antinaons addition to the bottom of the hair root forces the hair proper out through the scalp.

THE HAIE PAPILLA is surrounded by the hair root, which thas takes a bulbous form. Above the hair root er bulb-whioli cecupies abont three-fourths of the entire follicle-in the neck of the hair follicle, below which the most penetrating fluids known to Medical Science can not penetrate, Therefore, the story of feeding the starved and impoverished air roots with an external application is all a myth.

THE SHORT PORTION of the hair follicle abovo its neck opope somewhat like a fannel and is filled with the outer sealp skin. Opening into this outer portion are the highly import aat oil or sobadous glands which, from their location, are most exposed to disene. When these oil glands become infestod with a certain miorobie growth (the ease of dandruff) thera is hair disease and finally hair death.
