A QUESTION OF LETTERS.
LATIN V. GOTHIC SCRIPT IN QERVANTAG
In Germany, as elsewhere, there are supe patriots, who live in a state of perpetual anxiety as to the safety of their country, Their latest cause for alarm is the monnee to the German. script. The true peril does not yet lie very oloso, The committoo that examine the in numerable petitions showorod in upon the Releistag, and soparates the faw grains of what they contain from the great mass of encnta bering chaff, lias recommended a proposal put forward by one of then, that the use of Latin script should be favoured by its being taught in the elementary schools.
That, in itself, remarks a Berlin corres pondent, means very little-in fact, practically Dothing The Committee for Petitions is not the Reichstag, and it remains to be seen whe ther this body will take dhio sume view of the maltor, and even if it -dous, it is by no means cortain that its opinion will be acted upon.
If, as is, however, oxcendingly improbable, buanaity's unfallled good intentions should prove insuficient for carrying cut certain ex- tensiva paving works for which, it is said, they used to be used-any doficiency an easily be made good with resolutions of the Reichsteg that have been latterly without tangible result, But perhaps the action of the Petitions Con- mittee is merely a protext, and the agitation which the superpatriots are said to be preparing is directed against a much more powerful anomy of the German zoript, namely, custom. As far as the cateide observer can discera; all that cau be said in favour of the Gothic script is that it is the most pharacteristically German thing loft In the world. It is, however, an open question: whother its desppearance would mean the immediate collapse of the empire. On the other

laritios make it tedious to write and its unifor. mitjos difficult to read. For this reason many Germans never use it at all but rely exclusively on the Latin script, familiarity with which is au essential part of decous education
It is, in fact, evident that the Gothie script is going the same way as the Gothic print. It Is pretended by the superpatriots that the in- creasing use of Intin type, especially in works of a learned character, is a delicato compliment to the foreigner or a gracious concession to his ignorance. This however, hardly seems to explain why the same lettering is employed in practically all the typewriters used in this country, for all shops signs, and for all comp mercial news and displayed advertisements in the Prass, oven in the papers which exist for the 'dissemination of superpatriotisms. The fact is that the superiority of the Latin typo-writer. script is admitted implicitly oven by those who most loudly extol the Gothic, and its ultimate triumph is only a question of time.
POISON BY MICROBES.
ST. PETERSBURG, MULDEE TRIAL/
A trial is proceeding at St. Petersburg of persons concerned in the alleged organisation. for the killing off of wealthy relatives and the immediate realisation by their heirs of their 'expootations." The charge against the chief prisoner Dr. Pantheako is of poisoning wealthy people by means of the injection of cholers, typhoid, and diphtheria bacilli. The three prisoners aCO ***

To stated that Count O'Brien is a cousin of Countess Tarnowska, while Dr. Panchenko is a relative of the ex-Promier, Count Witte,
Panchenko affirmed (states Router) that O'Brien paid him to go to Cronstadt to obtain cholora endotoxin. Panchenko said he gaye tubes of this endotoxin to O'Brien.. It would seem that cholera poisoning was consid ored too risky, for subsequently Panchenko visited Professor Zarolotny, and under the pro- tence of carrying on bacteriological experiments naked for some diphtheritic toxin. Professor Zarolotny, after giving him a small quantity, recommended him to go to the Institute of Ex perimental Medicine, where a chemist guve Panohonko two tabes,.
