The late Dr. Marques was born in Macae in the 27th September, 1852, and was the eldest son of Commendedor Laurenco Marques and Lady Maria Anna Josephs Pereira Marques. Ha was educated in St. Joseph's College, Alacao, under the Jesuit Fathers, who retired from that Colony, in 1877, by decree of the Lisbon Government. Young Marques went to Lisbon in the same year and joined the Campolido Collage nan border. From there he went to Dublin and matriculated at the King and Queen's College of Physicians in 1875. He mado rapid progress in his stadies, nud as soon as he bad obtaiand his diploms of physician and arg on in 1878 he returned to China. From Mang ho came over to Hongkong and practised his profession till 1095. Within this period he occupied several important positions in the Hongkong Civil Service.
