HE "HARRIET - HOAX--- TRUE STORY OF SOCIETY SPOOF. (BY THE SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Or ein
"LONDON CHRONICLE."}
NUNEATON, Jan. 29th. Aftor many hours of rohing I has suc ceeded in doing something to fix the identify of the mysterious "Harriet Churchill," whose name has been the cause of wonder and specula tion arose two continents.
** Ali now you are asking too much. Pleas, do not ask me to give all cur story; for, o course, it is not all over yet, and there may be a lot more fan before the curtain falls,"
Who is this dealer in scandal, who has passed Uke a dealer in rage and old bottles at the kitchen door! Whom does the represent, and who are

"I wanted to heighten the spoof by If the story which I have heard to night is achosing for Harriet the most out-of-the way true one-and it was told to me in all serious country cottage we could find, covered with 'ness and good faith-Harriet Churchill" in a composite body made up of several people and creepers and that kind of thing about the last and place in which you would expect to find a society woman, but I was overrated by my colleagues-it had to be in Birminghain for convenience anke, and in Birmingham It was.
• *Bat Tein till you one thing-in setting our trop we havo caught all sorts of fauny things which we little expected to catcù; I may be able some day to tell ya about this. But the horrifed readers who have wept over the deplorable fact that scandal or be bought woold be still more horrified if they kusw the kind of people who are enly too anxious and willing to sell scandals, if they get the chance"
Bat how about Harrist Churchill, of Lady- wood-road, Birmingham?" I asked
several ideas.
In other words, she is a near relative of Mrs. Harris, and the mythical Books of Sheffield." She has been called into being according to my informant, in order to be the igurehead of a host which, in its daring and starting originality, has not been excoded since thedays when Theodore Hook set all London agog about Herners-street. To put it pixialy, "Harriet Churchill" is an elaborate piece of | bluff, which has come off and hoared the whole
world.
My chase began from a spot where the trail ended at Ladywood-lans, Birmingham, from which place the "incriminating" letters were sent. That I found to be a mere address to which, for convenione, replies were delivered: The only information to be got there was that the mysterious lady Bewegatherer lived somewhere at "a hall in the Midlands." That was indefuite enough, but a few hours" Barch enabled me to strike the scen, which, as followed it, became_plainer and plainer, until it ended at the house I was in
wearch of.
The ball, which is Miss "Harriet's" home, is a pretty rambling old building now used as a farmhouse. It has a wide verandah runsing all round, and inside are some fine old Adams roctus, with huge grates, in which the beech legs crackled comfortably on this cold winter night.
The way to it a long and weary, Several times we lost our way in the dark and winding lanes of Warwickshire, for the house is in sa lonely a spot as could well be imagined. But it was reached at last
Inquiry as to whether Miss-lived there was answered is the affirmative. "Could I see her "Yes, certainly."
She was in bed, I was told, but she should be
called down.
In the meantime I chatted with the old yeoman, who was the father of the house. With the vigorous hospitality of the county I was tempted with beef and home-made cider. We talked dairying and oher semaking and the effect of different pastures on the quality of
cheese,
In the midst of our conversation the lady of whom I was in search came into the room. made many apologies for coming to see her at such an untimely hour-at 10 o'clock on a Sunday evening, but my apologies were soon checked.
"ONLY & PART OF HARRIET," "Why, I am charmed to see you," she cried. Wherever have you been? What have you papers been doing? Here we have been waiting and watching for the opportunity of telling you of the success of our little game, and you have never taken the trouble to come after us."
I was rather mystified at this. I was a total stranger, in a strange house, miles away in the country; yet I was received with something like anthusiasm. What did it mean? Was this "Harriet Churchill" Pị
She had a mobile, intelligent faco, with sparkling black eyes, and her every word was accompanied by a smile. Sometimes these smiles rose to bursts of sunny laughter. Her bair was prematurely grey, and, in fine, she was just such a woman as one would expect to find in a country farmhonse whers the owner was

But was she Harriet? That was a question I gave up.
"Have I the honour of speaking to Churchill'?" I asked:
The answer was a peal of laughter, which made me stare...

OUT HUNTING.
But about this hunting?" I askod
How can you ask such a question? Of course we were out hunting-hauting the octopus and with the West end physician and the butler and other poople for hounds; and 1 think you will admit that we have got him.
"Hunting! Hunting! That is the very word for it! We have been lauting him for four years.
As for Harriet's name, someone suggested Flora Shaw you remember Rhodos and his evidence at the inquiry, when he asked Have you seen Florn? But here again I was over. ruled for it was consideral thut th's was rather too palpable,

CAROLINE ISLANDS. REVOLT.
A MAGISTRÄTE MURDERED.
Graphic details of the recent native revolt in the Carolina Islands in which, as already briefly reported by cable, a number of Euro- peons and friendlisa" loat their lives, are nowW to hand. The trouble started in the Fermoy district of the island of Ponape, the punishment of an insubordinate native labourer engaged in road constraction rousing the anger of his fellow works, whose attitude became so mene in that Mr. Hollborn, the district magistrate's assistant, and a road-making expert named Honner, were forced to seek protection at the Roman Catholic Mission Station
As soon as the news of the incident reached the neighbouring colony, Mr. "Beder, the district magistrate and his secret ry, Mr. Branok. mana, attended by two native servants, started by boat for Fermoy,
They were warned that the natives were in a dangerous temper, but disregarding the warn- inge, approached the scene of the disturbance, and were immediately fired upon. The Pageant promises to be one of the greatest historical spectacles over witnessed, for neither money nor paius are being spared in the lort to make the 24 scenes which are to be ensoted accurate representations of events of the various periods seleated. BERIES OF SPOUTS,
Well, I have been suffering from this for years, and so have many of my friends. At last we have tired of it, and some of them, living on the other side of the Atlantis, have suffered
exactly the same thing only to a rather worse
extent.
"We put our heads together and we have supplied some original ideas of our own, and hardly of the kind that the people that wanted them had bargained for.
We have been devising a series of spoofs and trays for the past four years, and at last our patience has been rewarded, and the
people wo ere after have fallen into them."
But, do I understand," I said, that there

"Good gracious, no! Of course there is not !" she replied with another burst of hearty- laughter. Do 1bok like a person who wants to buy this sort of goods P. The butler and the West-end physician, and the other people whe are seandalised and horrified, are only a part of the trap which has caught somebody. There have been many others with different baite, but this is one which has caught well, the people We wanted to catch."
But am I to understand that the butler, the West-end physiolan, and the other people are as mythical so Harriet Churchill" F" I asked.
Eventually the arrival of the steamer Ger- marie at Ponape relieved the settlement, the vessel remaining to guard the colonists until gunboats reached the island.

Of this ten thousand or more costumes required already completed, work which necessitated a staff of over 200 workers being engaged prac tically night and day during the past twelve months. All the anterial employed in the manufacture is of the finest quality, and all the principals, and there are many hundreds of them, will be clad in the final satias, Ailke, and richest velvets, compatable with the dignity of the characters they are impersonating.
It will thus Fe soen that the cost of dressing the Fageant alone is a very big item of expendi tare, for the dresses rouge in price from two pounds to thirty guineas, the latter price having been paid for the outfit for the lady who will play the part of Queen Elizabeth.
Another important item is the armour for the Kuights. It is doubtful whether there is Raffisient available armor in the country for the linndreds of characters that will be thus clad in the Pageant, so it was decided to mannfac ture special suits for the occasions. In order to do this a special armenry has been established; at the Crystal Palace, where no fewer than 80. workmen are busily engaged in turning out the mail armours. The chain armour, acother big item in itself, has been contracted out,
These are only a few of the faels and figures connected with the staging and dressing of the Pageant of London. There are a thousand and one other miner details, all more or less im portaut in themselves.
