VALUABLE SERVICES FOR SHIPPING,
PRESESTATION TO MR. W. H. COOKE.
At a meeting of the Chamber of Shipping held at Morchants' Hall, St. Mary Axe, a pro-
a sentation of silver plato was made to Mr. W.

H. Cooke, who is retiring from the office of LONDON STOUT.
secretary after thirty years' service. Letters
of regret for absence wers rescived from Lord Invorelydo, Lord Pirrie, and others.
-
Sir Edward Haia, the president of the Chamber, said that the reliroment of Mr. Cooke after thirty yours of faithful service, marked the severance of a very long and honourable- connection, and, though the Chamber would without doubt extenil in the future its sphere of usefulness and'infusuca, in the minds of the -older members at least it would never seem quite the same place in Mr. Cooke's absence. When they found it impossible to urge further objec tions against Mr. Coola's decision it was felt that boought not to be allowed to pass into retire- ment without receiving from the shipping com- munity some token of their appreciation of his many valuable services, mad a sufficient sum kad boon received to enable them to pr-zout to Mr. Cocks that very hauslome piece of silver plate oh which had boon inseribed some testimony of the waris regard they had for him, To Mr. Cooke they farther ventured to give a ring as a momento of the occasion. He wished thoni beth every happiness and long life. Mr. F. Shadforth Watts (chairman of the General Shipownova" Society and of the Shipowners' Parliamentary Committeo, Me.. C. E. Bryglitiman (chairman) of the Dicimuntary · Committeo), and Mfr. Pembroko also spoke highly of Mr. Cooko's work, roferences being specially made to his mervices in connection with the Port of Lonilon Bill.
After the presentation had been made by Mr. T. L. Doritt (president of the Shipping Fod- oration), Mr. Cooke assured the Chamber, an the part of Mrs. Cooke and himself, that they were deeply grateful. In 1880, when he first outered the City as secretary of the General Shipowners' Society, what struck him most was the satire also of any neouinity among the shipowners of the various ports. Loudon pulled one way, Liverpool another, the. Clyde a third,
and the North-East Const a fourth. But that was now all ore, and when the Shipawnors
Parliamentary Committes spoke on Parliamen tary matters it spoko with full authority as re- presenting sine-tenths of the merchant shipping touage of the United Kingdom. Thirty years ago elipowners were faunted, with some justizo, with being a rope of sand; now blunt, ropo, was fast becoming, if it had not already baccion, a zope of steel. In the futare ha felt there was a real danger to their interests in the growing toudency of modoru legislation to bureauerggy. One of the inevitable results of

For any reasons foreign travel way, says their W. I. Builder, fail to help the architect and to raise the standard of his work; that does not justify the contention that it is injurious in itself, but only to the effect that it is not in its proper place in an educational scheme, What it place is deponds to a large extent on the character of the student; with fine it may come earlier than with another, but it will bo safe to say that it is better late than early. Far more will be gathered by one who has had a long and thorough course in the principles of desiru than by
who. haring had little training in this rospect, may dorote his attention to attractive subjects for his pencil, regardless of whether they advance his know- ladge of architectural composition and expres- sion. The experienced designer will get noth- ing but good from the study of buildings whether they be those of melissal trance, classic Cathay he will not be distracted by the naaccastoined detail and curiosities of construction, hat will Jelve amid these to recover the spirit and intoa tion of the original designer. To say that such studies as thiess do not tond to fit a man for work in any age or in any material only proves a lack of appreciation of the broad idealism which the problems of architecture demand for their satisfactory solution. Our riow may by summed np as follows: Travel and seo as much as possible, but what you see study thoroughly and analyse rather depict. Postpone your grand tour us long na possiblo, and first reach as high a standard as time and ability periait in the art of design,
