AN EMPIRE TRADE MARK The members of the Imperial Industries Clab ined together at the Criterion Restaurant re cantly, and after dinner there was a discussion m the desirability of establishing an Empire Trade Mark," Sir George Wyatt Truscott wa in the chair, and the company included Lord Justice Fataler Moulton, who was the special guest of the soning, Sir Williata Grantham, Sir lichard Solornon (High Commissioner for South Africa), Sir George Roid (High Commis sioner for Australia). Sir Waltor Hely. Huthin- son, Sir Jeremiah Colina, Colonel Sir John E. Bingham, Sir John Cockbura, ir Goorge Haytor Chub, telon. William Hall-Jonas, (High Commissioner for New Zealand), the Hun. John McCall (Agent-General for Tasm nia), Mr. Astbury, K.Ü., and Mr. Cather, K.C. | Lord Justics Plochor Moulton, who opetiol the disonssion, said Ts had bron from his earliest years an authusiast for trade marks. The adop tion of a trade mark meant that a man desired to be measured by his conduct in the past. Ho wished his past behaviour to constitute a Insis of his future succoss. The trade mark to-day was an obertivo link betwoon charastor and suneess in business. But it was not alone the individual who should be able to link himself to the goods he sent all over the world. The trade mark should apply not only to the individual bat to the dmmunity, this communal de mand lod to the establislaint of the for chandise Marks Act-an Act which, in his opinion, proceeded on wrong lines, particularly in its invocation of the criminal law for its enforcement. He had himself soon trade jealousies fought under the guise of criminal law, and hu ber thoroughly ashamed of it. It was now suggested that thers should. be an Empire trade mark. There wore toung difficultio- to bo facut before a gutt and effective Empire trade mark oònald lus established. There would be a tendonoy to put that mark on goods which did not deserve it and if it was going to have any value thore mast be some security for. its reliability other than personal inforest. Then, again, it must uvaren god so that it did not in- terfere with elasticity of trade; and there would be enormone difficulty in ding what could justly be called "British goods" "He was deeply: thankful that is position on the Bone wont not involvo him in the drafting of that definition. The dealing with trade marks in relation to indvidual traders was ecmpuraively simple. It might even be possible to apply them to the forty millions of population in the British Line; but

PORT SAID, SUEZ AND STRAITS. admitted that the question presented difficulties rousel aro hereby informed at their Goode ara Consignees of Carga by the above-named Not the least of them was that the individual batug landed and placed AT THEIR Risk in the trador might make an unfair ns of the Etapiro Hongkong, and Kowloon Wharf and Godown niork; bat as on Imperialist he hoped that some Godowas at Kowloon, where each Consign effort might be made to arrivent a reasonablent will be sorted ont Mark by Mark and understanding.

The quidity of the goods should be reached for by the name of the perang sending them out rather than by a general declaration of origin within the British Empiro.

Mr. J. E. Erans-Jackson said the idea of an Empire trade dark originated in Shoffold a quarter of a century ago, and he was convinced that it would be possible for Englishmen to form & council with sufficient intalligence to enable such a mark to ho properly used over, it would bo possible, under the Morchandise

More Marks Act, to prosecute anybody who used the mark wrongfully. The object of the marke was to trace origin rather than to accept it as a guarantee of a standard of quality. It would be 3 sign to patristic citizens who wished to sup- port inginstries within the Empire.
