Captain C. M.De Bartolomé formally commis- sioned the now battleship Neptune at Portsmouth on January 11th for special servico. She will relieve the Dreadnought as flagship of the Home Fleet at the end of March, when Admiral Sir William May, the present Commander-in-Chief, haule down his flag. At present the Neptune is in dry dosk at, Portsmouth receiving her finishing touches, The gucleus crew of the battleship Illustrious was turned to the Neptune, the remainder of the ratings being made up from the Royal Naval Barracks and the Gunnery School. The Ilustrious was recommissioned the same day with a nuclens orew for fasther service with the Portsmouth Sub-Division of the Home Fleet. The Neptuur is to tearo on her experimental cruise shortly, and it is understood that she will proceed to the Mediterranean, afterwards returning to Portsmouth for the shange of ad- mirals, The huge vessel, which is the largest and most powerful battleship in the world yot completed for Bea, was ready factory respect, and most of hor stores were on board when her maiden commissioning pennant was hoisted.

Much entisfaction has been expressed in doak- yard circles at the completion of this das ship so well within the two years, now the alloited time for building a battleship. She was really rowly by the end of Docomber, with the excep- tion of a few minor details, an! as she was not coumenced until Jan. 19, 199, she Way therefore finished a full fortnight under the two years. This newest battleship is heavier, longer. broader, and more powerful than the original Dreadnought, and yet she has cost loss. She is 510ft loag, displacer 19,900 tons, and sleams at over 21 knots. She can fira six 1n, gnus sheat, oight astar, and ton broadside. This is two more astern and on the broilsis than the early Dreadnoughts.

The Neptunes the eleventh Dreadnought to heist the pennant for servica in the British Flest, and she will be joined shortly by the battleship-cruiser Indefatigable.
