NEW YEAR THEFTS.

Thefts have bean abnormally frequent here. during the past for days and the various polies tations have been overwhelmed with com- plaints relative to the doings of the light: fingered persuasion. The last days of the old year were particularly notorious for snatching and thefts from the person, and most of these offences took place in Sheung Moon Tai and Shap Pat Pot, whore the crowds were so dense fast it was almost impossible to make one's way through them. The worst case of robbery occurred late at night on New Year's eve, near Shap Fat Po. A merchant sent a foki with three bags of silver to a bank, and while on his way he was set upon by a number of thieves who made off safely with the bullion. Extra-
