OCEANI SAFETY.

KODBEN STEAMSHIPS AND THE SCIENCE -OF-STABILITY,

The inquiry into the mystery surrounding. the fate of the Waratah will doubtless have the effect of causing some amount of nervousness- on the part of those who bare to enderinke long journeys by ees, eays the London Daily Graphic,

WATOS.

Stability is an easily understandable term; it, may be taken to mean the ability of the vessel to remain in an approximate'y vertical position" in spite of the violent buffeting of wind and Recovery powers" also is a phrase which needs little explanation, for it describes the ability of a ship to return quickly to a ner- mal-position after having bean fiseled over by a gast of wind or an extra heavy wavD,

Everyone knows the feeling in rough weather when a vessel is rolling badly, that if she heels over a little more it must be impossible for her to right herself, and what the average reader wishes to know is to what extent a vessel on safely heel-in other words, what is the limit of her recovering power. This, however, is a point that cannot be settled on general lines, since the stability of ships depends not only upon individual design, but upon the character of the cargo of each vessel, and the method in which it is loaded.

CARGO.

If the cargo is to be one of human beings, the problem before the designer is comparatively simple, for he has only to allow such a margin of safety that, with all the passengers sheltering from a gale on the tee side at the highest portion of the ship above the water line-that is to say, ander the worst possible conditions- the vassal shall still be stable. Th's naturally necesitates the provision of a wide margin, especially on a large vogel such as a modern Atlantic liner, which at certain seasons of the year may carry a full load and at others perhaps only half its complement of passengers.

A ves:al must have the combination of great recovering power and comfortable riding, but, unfortunately, these are two opposed virtues, for if a rogol has the maximum recovering power that can possibly provided, she will ride uneasily, owing to the rapidity and jerkiness with which sho will endeavour to rotarn to her normal position.

Aa appearance of top-heaviness, such as characterises macy a modern best, does not necessarily indicate that the vessel is of fatty and dangerous design.

МІСН ДЕСЕВ,

That appearance is caused solely by the desire of passengers to live during their short stay on the boat as high above the water line na their means permit, and th's natural tendency has brought about a typoof of vessel having a series of superimposed decks, a style of constraction which must neopasarily lend an air of instability to the boat in the eyes of the initiated.

The real fact of the matter, however, is that it

is as easy to provide for a wide range of stability in a vessel having many decks as in a boat having but one This is simply a question of design, and, indeed, the tall sides or high freeboard, of the liner make it the safest of all vessele, so that the top-heavy" appearance may be a sirine instead of the fault that it seems at first sight.

The stability of any vessel depends upon its metacentric height; that is to say, the relative positions of its metacentre and its contas of gravity. The metacentre is a term in physios, indicating that point in a floating body in which when the body is disturbed from ita normal position, the vertical line passing through the centre of grarity of the fluid displaced (regarded as still fillin the spare ocupied by the body) meets the line which paises through the centre of gravity of fluid and body when the latter ja at rest.

ROLLING IN BAD WEATHER.'

It is a simple law that fora vessel to fast with stability the melscontre must be above the dentro of gravity and upon the precise relation of the positions of these two points to each other and to the ship itself the staf ity aud comfort of the vessel depends. The height of the cue point above the other directly determines the power of the vessel to return to the vertical, and the safest and mca comfortable ship is that in which this relation has been most accurately estimated for average requirements.

The great recovering powers and stability of modern well-designed ships is illustrated by the fact that as long ago sa 1893, in a voyage un- dertaken just before Christmas, H.M.S. Resolu- tion struck bad weather in the Pay of Hincay and a roll of 47 degrees was recorded, while abe was lying-to. The incident was illustrated in the Daily Graphic of December 26th, 1893, from sketches supplied by an officer on the re-sel, and her adventurons trip was reported by a corre spondent in the same issue. The incident is worthy of being recalled at the prozent moment, when it is our purpose to emphasise the erstitial safety of modern vessels.

STRIKING EXPERIMENTS

at the request of the

Local Government Board for Ireland.

The body-building power of Bovril proved

to be equal to from 10 to 20 times the weight of the Bovril taken.

"The reates of the expertinents conducted at "the request of the Local Government Board for *Ireland during the past year, in the School of "Physiology, Trinity College, Dublin, as to the nutritive value of Bovril, and communicated to "the British Association at Sheffield ("Times" "report, September Srd), bare created considerable "interest amongst the Medical Frofession,

"In order to secure a decisive result, the fests *were carried out on dogs because, owing to the "easier control of the diet and the abeenon of “Alsturbing influences, mental and physical, much "more exact resuita can be obtained on animals "than on human beings. The dogs were first "brought to a constant weight on dried dog *biscuit mixed with known quantities of water. "Bovril-from 2 to 7 grammes-was then addod "to the food, with the resuls that the weight of the mimals went up as much as 50 to 100

"graminer, or, in round numbers, 10 to 20 times "the weight of the Bovril given.

Afterwards Bovril was discontinued, and the "animals fell back to the original weight. Com- "pared with the effect of hard-boiled white of egg. "it was found that from 8 to 10 times so much by weight of the latter had to be given to obtain the asme increase in weight, or, taking the dried "organic solids in the two foods, from 2 to 4 times as much egg-white had to be given to obtain the "Bovril effeot

"In several of the experiments there was a re- #tention of reserve nitrogen, and in all so increased "utilisation of other foods,

*It was therefore concluded that Bovril had both *a direct and an indirect nutritive value, the latter "by causing a more complete digestion and absorp

tion of the other food given."
