FLIES IN ENGLAND.
Flies in dwellings have acquired ill reputo as carriers of disease, though little is known of the extent of the harm they do. Dr. Robertson, health officer of Birmingham, Eng.. reports that the local investigation has indicated a close connection between five and epidemis summer diarrhea, and it is supposed that the fies spread infection by means of germs taken up from the decomposing garbage and other filth on which they live. The fies of towns are of several kinds. Of those actually caught in Birming. ham for identification the common house-dy numbered $2,360 specimens, or 91 per cent. of the whole; lesser house-fly, 1,154, or 4.7 por cent.; bluebottle fly, 840, or 3.4 per cont.; special By, 190; greenbottle fly, 12; bright blas fly, 8: atomoxya calcitrane fly, 3; others, 5-te total of the fire lost-named variatios equalling 09 per cent. LABOUR CONDITIONS IN THE
PORTUGUESE COLONIES. ・・
Correspondence has lately, passed between Messrs. Cadbury Brothers (Limited) and the Colonial Minister of the Portuguese Republie respecting the reforms promised by the new Government in regard to the labour conditions of Angola, and the islands of Sen Thomé and Principo.
Tery
The Brat letter in the correspondence was sent on October 13 by Messre. Cadbury Brothers to the Minister of Marine and Colonies at Lisbon, and contains the following passages: "We have received with great fatisfaction a cable from our friend, Mr. Alfredo do Silva, of Oporto, stating that it is the intention of the Portuguese Republio zadically to change the
of oxisting labour conditions Argola and the islands of Sen Thomé and Principe. We wol- come this information, and should be plonsed to do anything in our power to assist you in this direction, and when it is absolutely proved to the British Consular staff that the old conditions of slavery have entirely disappeared it will be a pleasure to us to reopen busines rolations.... We have always considered that the root of the evil has been in Angola, where inst protection the native has never received 6 from his Government, but has been exploited by Labour agente mal for the Government ployees.

"The Portuguese Republio has adopted the noble idea of justice and freedom to all ite subjecte at home and abroad, and we sincerely desire that you may have God's help in carrying out the work to which you have set your hands."
Mesare. Cadbury, in the above letter, specifi ed several abuses which caused safering to the antives. They. however, received a reply in which the Portuguese Gozurument wrote es follows:
The Government of the Republic intends to settle the question of the San Thome services by fulfilling integrally and loyally the present regulations, which protest the natives and guarantee them perfect liberty in their recruit- ing md repatriation.**
To his Messrs. Cadbury replied:
"Wa ere much obliged for your letter.. May we respectfully point out that these regula tions are, in our opinion, insuficient to provide for the true liberty of the native! In our last letter we stated: (1) That there is no prevision for the repatriation on one dato of married contracted labourers of different dates; (2) that children are now carried from the mainland without any contract at all; (3) that contracted labourer child born of San Thome has obtained its freedom. We have mentioned three illustrations of grave sbuse within the limits of the present regulations, and

"Suitable to the most delicate stomach.”
Dear Sirs. Some time since I became a victim of phthisis, and rapidly lost weight. When, however, on the advice of my doctor, I availed myself of Angier's Emulsion my health began to mend, and I quickly put on flesh, The Emulsion is suitable to the most delicate stomach; my digestion was never hindered nor my appetite lessened by its action. Its mfluence upon the pulmonary organs is most beneficial, while it certainly fortifies the system in a marked degree. I may say that no medicine I have hitherto taken has been as officacious. Unlike other emulsions, it does not offend the palate, its flavour is delicate, and I was able to take it with relish,
