The price of rice is low and there is a trade depres- sion-that is, one results from the other. What better argument could you have? It is true the low rice-market theory has had its opponents, one section among those contending that the depression was due to the people persisting in hoarding their money and not spending it-apparently upon things they could do without. This theory again does not stand a practical test, since it would appear that if those hoards exist they will be soon absorbed by the extra cost of living during the winter, which will not in any degree assist in the removal of the depression. On the whole, however, it sečina best to abandon the iden that there was any connection between the rice and the trade tow price of depression. The cause of the low price of rice does not need investigation; plonti-. ful harvests are sufficient to necount for thal. The depression running concurreat
