For Bronchitis
"Its curative effects
are remarkable.”
109 Messina Avenue, West Hampstead.
Dear Sire have for years been a sufferer from obtonio bronchitis. Three years ago I wrote for a bottle of Angier's Emulalom, and found so much benefit from taking it that I have since never been without It. Its carative effects are remarkable, and I consider it invaluable in bronchitis. My little grand-daughter has also been grantly benefited by its use. She is troubled with a persistent cough, which only Flolds to the Emulsion. Ihave recommended it to many of my friends, and shall continue to do so.

AN ADJUSTADLE WIRELESS RECEIVER.
The magnetic detector of Rossi signals the arrival of Hertzian wares by changing twisting ossillation of a fiue iron wire stretched in a magnetic field. Two he magnete are in line, parallel to the wire, with like poles, point- ing in opposite directions. The wire carries annall mirror at its contre, and in surrounded by a wire coil traversed by an alternating current having a frequency equal to that of the torsional oscillation of the stretched wire around its axia, The mirror oscillates
with
the wire. Placed in oiroult with the anteums, the degree of oscillation of the stretched wire fa diminished whenever it is traversed by the high frequency currents pro- dused in the antenns by the arrival of Hertzian waves, and the signals so received can be re corded photographically by a ray of light from the mirror. This receiver, unlike others, can be made to respond only to special waves. It can be adjusted for various frequencion, and is affected only by trains of waves of a very small
| range of frequency.
·BOOM FOR IMPROVEMENT IN LIGHT, **Light without heat” was found twenty years ago in a large Cuban froßy. In the "Photinus Pyralis," a smaller firefly common in Waab Ington, Dr. H. E. Ivas and W. W. Coblents have now made a more complete investigation, and have found the luminous efficiency to be 96.5 per cent. as compared with 0.4 per cent. for the carbon glow lamp, 1.3 for the tangston lamp and less than 4 per cent, for the mercury are, the most efficient artificial illaminant. The firefly light, being green, is not adapted to It is possible that white light way be built up by combining the emissions of several substances like the firefly material, and then the efficiency might reach 15 per cent.

THE OSRAM LAMP A BRIEF HISTORY.
The "Oeram" lamp was corupercially in- troduced to the English market in the early part of 1907. It was then only possible to make axeed 120 volts and of candio power not over 50: t for use on circuits whose pressure did not This necessitated the lamps being restricted to low-voltage sirgaits, exospt in instances where they could be rus two in series on high-voltage |mains. For house and shop lighting a 50 o.p.: lamp was sometimes found to provide too high an
lamination. The huge factory that has been erected at Hammeremth by the General Electric Coy. for the manufacture of Osram lamps is now employing over 1,100-hands, so that it is evident rapid progress has been made; and after various stages of improvement, lamps suitable for buru- in on pressures not exceeding 260 volta are now being preduced. The company has also bee
ssful in making lampasuitable for pressures And lamps suitable up to 135 volts in 16 op. for pressures up to 200 to 260 volts in low as 25 .p. This has enabled the Osram lamp to be used in practically any building where the old form of carbon lamp has already bion at work, It might be of interest to point out that the Osram Ismp has now been brought to sob a stage of perfection that the current consump." tion is only approximately 1 watt per candle- power, which is about 75 per cent. less than that taken by carbon filament lampa-in other words, an Osrams lamp only takes approximately pre-quarter of the current of a carbon tamp. The Osram Ismp, it is claimed,is unaffectad by vibration, and these lamps have been used for a considerable time in all the leading milways many instances Osram lamps have been used, with great success, fitted in clusters on áttings sug- panded from tramway poles. They are in use for street lighting at Hampstend, Hammersmith, Marylebone, Wimbledon, Canterbury, Exeter, Acton and many other towns, no complaint being received from these pieces that they do their Work inefficiently. The great effoisney and the long life of the lampe hare, in fact, enabled the Corporation authorities, we are informed, to compete successfully with gas, and in most instances the corporations are able to show B great saving in yearly cost after receiving an increased illumination. The life is three or four times as great as that obtained from carbon

PAINT FOR MONUMENTS, The stone preserving compound of R. M. Caffall is a mixture of parafin with creosote dis- volved in turpentine, and is designed primarily to protect against atmospherio action, while the paraffin prevents organic growth. This is the waterial with which was checked the decay of the pink granite Egyptian obelisk that was set up in Now York in 1881. On its now site the obeliak began to weather rapidly, and in 1885, when the protective costing was applied, 780 pounds of loose chips were removed. The heat. ing of the surface, necessary in applying the moisture--the melting point of which is 140deg. F-did not have the injurious effect feared, The hent on and the substance to be absorbed to the depth of half an inch and 673 pounda were applied to the 200 square yards of shaft and plinth. In the 25 years since then the stone has shown no decay.
THE MINERS' FIRS CURTAIS.
A curious kind of automatic fire onctain was described at the late Duesseldorf Mining Con- gress as a French engineer's device for stopping the spread of mine explosions. Planke thickly covered with powdered ashist are placed in the upper part of the gallery, and when an explosiou cecars the displaced dust forms a neutral zone that checks the firedamp and protects the part of the mine beyond. Buckets of water so arranged on the planks as to be easily upset are found to have a similar offoot.
CHEAP METAL FOR DEARINGS.
A metal for the bearings of machinery cheap- er than the usual ones containing copper-hau” been sought by W. Guartier in a soft matrix of lead imbedding iron or its alloys as hardeu- lng material. As, lead and iron du not mix lạ. a rioltan state, an intimate mixture of the pow- dered metals was prepared, either by precipitat- ing dilats lead solution with iron powder or grinding iron power and "lead-tree" crystals together, and the mixture was heated to 250 dag.. or 300 deg. C., and stamped in moulds. Various iron alloys may be used instead of puro iron. The products compare favourably in me- chonicul qualities with the more expouzivo bear. ing metals of copper in lead or tin, and can be readily produced. The stamped metals are regarded as tree alloys, obtained with- -out fusión. Similar producta were obtained by Friedrich by kneading, with one or more of the constituents in a party condition, and these also are pronounced zengine alloys.
JAMAICA ME
Banana meal is among the food supplies that is rapidly extending in use. It is made by drying and grinding the uripe fruit, and the meal has a chemical composition very different from that of the ripe fruit. When well ripened the fruit contains 70 per cent of sugar and only 1 to 2 per cent, of starch, while the meni has nearly 80 per cent. of starch and only 3 or 7 per ount. of sugar. A special banana "cocon” is mana- factured in Switzerland, and is claimed to

RHEUMATISM,
LUMBAGO & SCIATICA.
Rheumatism, Lumbago and Sciatica are three of the most common end mast painful complaints and practically arise from the same cause and the naus only distinguish the location of the disease. If the ams and legs are affected it is led Rheumatism; if in the Loins, Lumbago: and in the hip, Sciatica. The attacks are generally brought on by chills when the body is overheated, or by exposure to
damp or cold draughts, which act, not upon the bones or muscles but upon the Uric Acid in the Blood, which is the cause of the disease. The failure of the Liver and Kidneys to filter and absorb this Aid leads to an accumulation in the system, tends to clog the circulation, and harden the tissues forming the blood vessels. Thus every movement of the affected parts causes you intense agony. The pains are affected more or less by cold or heat. A damp day will double you up, or the warmth of the bed will intensify the pain. Rheumatism is generally regarded as one of the most difficult ailments to cure, and invariably medicines are tried simply with the hope of temporary relief. Dr. MORSE'S INDIAN ROOT PILLS have been wonderfully successiul not merely affording a cessation of the pain, but by driving the poison out of the blood and restoring the joints to their original suppleness. They get at the cause as no other remedy does. They get at the foundation of the complaint which is the blood and a trial will abundantly prove the wonderful efficacy of this remedy.
