THE UGLIEST CRUISER AFLOAT.
WARSHIP WHICH HAS NO “KOULDERS.
Great interest attaches to the speed tests of the new battleship Indefatigable. Her turbing are ostensibly designed to develop 44,000 LB.p.. and give a speed of twenty-six knots, but the engineering department of Devonport Dockyard ir calculating on an excess of from two to three
knots on this.
The Indefatigable will displace 19,250 tons en her trials. Her huti embodies some striking dopartures of design. From her stom to about ene-fifth of her length aft, she is built as a No racing yacht has such knife. Wodge. like lines. As sailors put it, she has no shoulders
at all.
There is a twofold purpose in this. Keendoss is essential to spoed, but it must not be carried beyond certain limite for seaworthiness. The Indefatigable is not iutorided to be seaworthy. She will be driven through the waves, not over them.
Her immoues freeboard forward readers this possible. Where a smaller vessel would drown herself, the Indefatigable will merely throw s smother of spray. The idea of minimising her lifting power is that she shall not lose her speed by plunging in hoavy weather, and that she shall prove a stolier gan-platform. Enormous billge keels will reduce her rolling.
REGULAR FUNNELB,
In appearance the Indefatigable will mark a farther step in that ugliness which seora inseparable from warship development. Her funnels, three in number, are all of different design, and st unequal distances apart. Added to this the forward tunnel is twenty feet higher than the other two.
The purpose of this is to carry the fumes. clear of the fire control station on the fore trip. The effect se sadly to mar th aymmetry of the abip.
Eight 12-inch guns of 50-calibre are mounted in four turrets, the wing pair being ocheloned, so that all the guns can be brought to bear on either broadside, and six ahoad or astorn.
The topsides of the Indefatigable are so barren of superstructure that she will practically be permanently cleared for action.
She will burn 900 tons of coal per twenty-four bours at full power. Four propellers drive her,
