·ATTACK ON THE PRESS,

libels against the Fourth Estate!

The Devil, like Miss Maria Corelli, has no mercy for the newspaper Fress. The richness of his language, the very depths of his hell, are reserved for newspaper editora and journal- Miss Marie Corelli has written a prois poemists. In fact, be attore the must flagrant of sa extraordinary character, which is issued in a handsome volume with illustrations in colour. In prom which just escapes being blank verse, she describes the adventures of the Evil One, who, at the steering wheel of a diabolical motor car, rides furiously over the world, crushing mankind beneath his grinding wheels.

Bat Miss Marie Corelli's: Devil sooms, ouriously enough, to express many of the Bentiments and convictions of the dis tinguished novelist who has crested him. That is rather puzsling. His intense Latrod of this Age of Speed, his furioms meory of motorists, air-men, millionaires, manufacturers, the beautiful butterfly women of society; and specially of modern newspapers, reflect very closely, though perhaps with fiendish eriggers tion, the opinions on those classes which Miss Corelli herself has expressed in her novels and manifestoes. Hero is her deseription of the Fiend:

Roll out your columns of vaporous notoriety, ye printing presses of the world!-spread wide the fame of the Anarchist and the Courtesan-mook and revile the spirits of the wise and true noise abroad the name of the Murderer and treat the Poet with derision- give flattery to the rich and scorn to the Lamble, teach nothing but the wit of lying, add venom to the tongue of scandal-dig up the groves of the great, and kill the repute tions of brave and pure! Tearing through space the diabolical motorist who set a bad sample to an age of pood destroy's everything on his wild night ride, and the phantoms of his victims cling to the bloody wheels of his charist. The innocent, the wise and the brave suffer destruction with those guilty of the foul crimes of aviation and taotoring.

Not even the Churches are spared, because He who stood within the Car, stearing it they also, according to the Devil and Miss straight onward, was clothed in black, and Corell, are guilty. They are pretenders to crowned with fire; large bat like wings flared holiness and thieves of virtue. All perleh. out on either side of him in woven wabs of No little one is saved, and after the annihilation smoke and fama, and his face was white as of mankind, the Devil gives his congratulations bleached bone. Like glowing embere his eyes to Ged that the fair world has been cleansed burned in their enormous sockets, shedding of "a pigmy race.” tarrific glances through the star-strawn space --and on his thin lips there was a frozen shadow of a smile more cruel than hato, moro deadly than despair,

THE AVENGer's hate

As he drives on fast and furiously, with grinding thunderous wheels, and with a horrid hate against mankind, of frightful irony against its tolles and vices, of terrific denunciation, and appalling threats.

Gradually, gently, and by faint degrees, a glimmer of pale gold divided the darkness with the wavering riss of dawn-oool wind parted the air into sweet breathe of trag. mape-and is the centre of the awful stillness a scarlet sun rise slowly fixing the red seal of God on the closed history of a world!

Miss Marie Corelli's extraordinary allegory full of bitterness, of rage and fury against the evils of the modern world, is so crnal that its lesson is lost in exaggeration. The world is not quite so bad! Even a motorist is not necessari.

On, on, over all beauty, all tenderness, all truth I ride- the Avenger, the Destroyer, the Torturer of Souls, the Arch-enemy of 17 moneter, and an aeroplane is not the wing- God! The Kingdom of Hell grows wide and ed chariot of vis-Daily Mail. deep-praise be to Man who makes it! I count up my growing possessions in the over- breeding spawn of human fust and avarice-I breathe and live and rejoice in the poison vapours of humau Selfishness! The men of these latter days are my food and sustenance, the following report:

The Hongkong Observatory yesterday issued the women my oholos morsels, my dainty delicates!
