THE SUPPRESSION OF LORD KITCHENER,
We must indeed be a fortante people when we can dispense with the services of a man like Lord Kitchener.
Cincinnatus was ploughing his lonely furrow whan a deputation from the Bonate informed him that he had been chosen dictator. Weare told that he left the plough with regret and repaired to the battlefield where his countrymen
hard were prossed, I wonder when the British nation will send deputation to Lord to Lord Kitchener on the golf links, I own to some uneasiness on reading in some journals that Lord Kitchener is not the great soldier that the world believes him to be. Tolstoi. It is true, has proved to his own satisfaction that Napo- Leon was more child at strategy and an infant at tactics.
But then Napoleon him self has told us that the greatest general in the one who makes fewest mistakes, and history, which does not judge Nepaloon by Waterloo, will not judge Lord Hitoboner by Paardebarg. These attacks may be dismissed as nothing more than the manifestations of an unway conscience, When we want to get rid of a rival wo do not begin by advortising his virtuou

servios or compulsory training. Lord Kit chamer is the only soldier who can apply the tent and make good our deficiencies. Lord Roberts is seventy-eight years old, and though Moltke did not resign his command of the Imperial Staff in Germany until he was ninety we prefer to begin with Lord Kitokener at sixty rather than at sixty-fire.”
KAISER'S SPEECHES.
TEUTONISM AND CHRISTIANITY INSETAKABLE,
Following is an amplification of the telegram published about thres weeks ago giving the Kaiser's explanation of his Speech at Koenigsberg:-
Commerce,
Speaking at the West Prussian provincial banquet at Marienburg the Emperor said
The co-operation of the various elements which constitute the strength and greatnss of the Fatherland- namely, bed raved tho
which building, and agrivaltare, province had only been made possible by the not that peace, the result of the great and glorions days which were won under our grant Emperor forty years ago, had been maintained in the country.
"It should be the common work of all classes ta advance the province and district, and this вопотол work must also be carried on over the whole of the great Fatherland, Marienburg and the Tentenie Knights have taught the lesson that Teutonism and Christianity are inseparably connected. This is the Illustration of the words which I recently spoke at Koenigsberg.
As my lamented grandfather and I, working under the high trust imposed upon us by our Lord and God, have understood it, so I assume it is understood by every honourable Christian whoever he may be."
The Emperor then appealed to all orceds to unite in brotherly love, and to all classes to The co-operate in common labour, their calling, in order to meet the needs of the State, supporters of one party should grasp the hand of their opponents in order to do great things for the Fatherland, and one creed should bear with another lovingly. All diffonities would be overcome with mutual esteem and love when they were regarded as trials imposed upon us from on high.
Are we really so richly endowed with ad- ministrators that we can afford to indulge in this reckless extravagance? What should we think of the business house that shelved its most experienced director at the moment when his advice would be most valuable? Yet this is precisely what our Government has done. There is no soldier in the Empire with the perience of Lord Kitchener. His conquest of the Sudan and South Africa does not give to sad the conquest of experience, measure of the Sadan did not, as some imagine, begin and ond with the battle of Omdurmansay more than the conquest of South Africa began and ended in a block-house. Having proved his capacity in the field, we sent Lord Kitchener to India in order to apply to our defences in the East some of that practical common-sense for which he is distinguished, Despite all abstacles, he accomplished his task and left India stronger Bad more

There is on the Imperial Defence Com mittee at least one distinguished pergon

his first
days in India, when Lord out the Commander-in-Chief came to loggerheads over the Military Member of the Governor-General's Council. Lord Kitchensr's victory in Sials has not been forgotten in Whitehall. Had he been more priable-mere accommodating-he might have returned to India as Viceroy, but a masterful servant in the terror of bureano rasy. What the bareanerat likes is a machine that he can control without raising a clamour in the market-place. And Lord Kitchener would never be content to become a mero machine,

What is Lord Kitchener's proper place? As a field-marshal he is on the active list of the Army - oficial euphemism for idleness in bis The case, for he has no datles to perform, suggestion has been made that he should sup plant General Sir William Nicholson as Chief of the Imperial General Staff. But there are insormountable obstacles in the way. In the first place, why should Sir William Nicholson resign this position, seeing that, unless he is made a feld-marshal, he is within sight of retirement on the ground of age? Nor is this AS SUPPLIED TO THE HOUSE OF the difficulty.
Lord
Kitchener
has his owxI convictions as to what is an Imperial General Staff, and they are not those either of the War
