WESTMINSTER CATHEDRAL.

MAGNIFICENT SITUĀK AT CONSRORATION. It is not long, as time is counted, since the first stones of a great Byzantine building were laid one upon another at Westminster, andar the watchful eye of Bentley, the architect, and sino Londoners first went out of their way a little to gaze at the high straight tower, the domes, and turrets and masive walls-Estern, and rather bizarre at first to Western yes of the new Roman Catholic Cathedral,

But yesterday June 28th-complete in struc ture and free from debt, Westminister Cathe deal was, pays a London exchange, solemnly Consecrated, and its altars were blessed, accord- ing to the old riles of the old faith.

For Boman Catholics in England i of course, a ceremony of high importance and solemnity, wd to others, not of that faith but knowing something of history, something of the old symboliam of the Christian faith, and with an eye for the beauty of rich colour, and of ecolesiastio pageantry, and of old world ritual, it cannot be without interest

"SQUARE BOTTLE” Island on 14th inst. for Timor, Manila and this thousand years of faith, art is murrounded by the history of spiritual symbolism. Apart altogether from its religious significanes, this ceremony of consecration, according to the old ritual, is of profound interest to students of history, for it was by such caramony that our forefathers in the early ngos of the world felt themselves anfeguardel against the malignant spirits of the naroon world. The charol was a hallowed house, swept cleat of all the devils which tempted the heart of man.

SUFFRAGETTES AND JIU-JITSU,

No longer is the annoying malo interjector to disturb the tranquility of the peaceful Suffra getto as hormetings, A Women Athletes* Society, the latest adjanet of the Women's Freedom Longue, has been organised by Mrs. Garrad, a ji-jitsu expert, and Miss Kelly, one of the hungoz ettikers who entered a Dandes meeting by way of the fanlights.

Mrs, Garrad is not an inch taller that five feet, but she has already enjoyed the pleasure the Confessor's Church of St. Peter at of throwings six foot policeman over her Westminister was dedicated on Holy Inno-shoulder. Yasterday again Bishops walked about a church in Westminster, and priests chanted agnis the old litanies, and inside the church there was the same rite, almost word by word and not by net, which was and for the Church of St. Peter, nor Westminster Abbey, eight and a half centuries ago. The imagination may fill up the gulf between those years and now-a gult soollig with strife and tragedy and religious turmoil, and martyrs of any creeds.

THE CEREMONY,

..

The ceremony yesterday was a long one. It began at 7:30 in the morning. It ended at 2.30. It began in the quiet and lendly vastuess of the cathedral, with only the Bishops and the dorgy busy thone in prayor and proparation. It ndod before a great multitudo watching the final acts

Tables were brought out into the sanctuary, and spread as though for the feast of a great lord, with many strange things, as they seemed to the uninitiated. There were vessels of ashes, sad salt and wine, and water, and costs of oil, and loares of tread, and wooden spoors, and clean white cloths, and

little waren erotse.

Upon the walls of the church twelve cheses had been carved. Upon the door there was marked a great white eros stretching right Boros, the unve. There was busy work in pre- poring the house and the feast. For everything that was to be and had to be cenacorated to a bigh parposo, and things of common was had a spiritual significance.

To the great door of the cathedral went the Archbishop, followed by the Bishops, and keock- ing at it once over the threshold with his pastoral staff, he said: "Tift up your gates, ye prices, and fe ye lifted up, yo everlasting doom, and the King of Glory shall come in "
