BAD LIVERS.

WATER-SOFTENING FILTER The water-eftoning process of Dr. R. Gaus of Berlin, claimed to have solved the problema ef oliesply and effectively treating the hardest waters, consists in a rapid filtering through ↑ composition onlled "permatit," which removes the calcium, manganese, iron and magnesíum compounds that render water hard, as well as any microbes that may be contained. If desired, the permatit may be so compounded as to leave the lime or the magnesium in the water. Ono method of preparing the material is by amelting olay with carbonate of sodium and adding quarte and the Tosalting granulons soda-aluminum, silicate is capable of exchanging its sodiuio not only for calcium and magnesium, but evan fox metals. The gold in sen-water nusy actually be separated out, though it is not stated that this can be done profitably. The cost of permulit is about 8 conts a pound, and when a filter has beocmo exhausted it may be regonerated by the spplication of common salt. Used in boilers, the softened water not only causes no incrustation but is said to require less cool in making steam BILICIOUS CELLULOID.
