The Japanse of to-day is not very fond of critician. Yet Japan fadly needs friendly

Panegyrics have, from the tourist standpoint, been overdone, in regard both to the land and the people. Criticism may be equally exaggerated in the other direction. Japan is doing well enough com mercially withont prasting money on an Exhibi- tion, which is located in a district remote from the centre of Tokyo, itself a mort unattractive city, and possessed of for charme which make any appear to the visitor. Indeed, no tourist really needs to go to Tokyo at all if he wishes to see Japan nt ita best. Alarge sums of money is being alloontod for the expenses, but it is quite inadequate, and I cannot see how the un- dertaking will prove remunerative. Dr. Kool's entire life was given to painstaking aut persavering but bold and original rosesret in madivine, particularly in the development and

extension of our knowledge of the disease-bearing germs and their behaviour under all possible conditions affecting human health.

The last great work undertaken by Dr. Koch was the study of the mysterious sleeping sickness, which is decimating some of the tribes of Africa. For nearly two years he lived in the geo-laden regions of Lake Nyanza, devoting all his aftergy to the strange malady, and discovered palliatives and methods of shocking the spread of the disense.

Dr. Koch's career as investigator began after his graduation in 1866 from the University of Gottingen. During the fourteen years follow. ing, which he spent as a humble practicing physician in several small towns of Eastern. Prasain, he was studying bacteriology, then a comparatively unknown science.
