Some years ago I undertook a journey in Africa and had calculated the distance from point to point at about a sixteen daya' march. I had hoped to engage twenty- for carriers, and knew the district to be almost waterloss, but I could only man- age to get four carriers! Many long months' work had been done before my journey was planned; I could not allow that to be wasted; so thore was nothing for it but to go forward, though the burden of each of us was far in excess of the usual amount As Inck would have it, however, we had only proceeded a for miles when it proved possible to engage two more carriers, who had followed us, and begamo willing to engage in the marsh,, At the end of our flyst day all was well, for we camped for the night when we reached our first water supply, having covered 10 miles that day. After the we hat a march of 29 hours without a drop of water and under a burning sau. It very dificult work, for we found ourselves ploughing through and, then climbing over granite rocks, descending a precipice into the dry bed of some old-time river, then climbing up the other side to high land, Panting and perspiring under their loads the carriers were almost on the paint of mutiny when we discover ed a small spring of freak water onzing out between the rocks, and this restored content.
