NEW POINT IN THE CONSTRUCTION;

NO. OF THE “COLOSSUS." The Colossus is one of the four armoured ships provided for in the 1909-10 naval programms, and is the first ship of last your's estimates to be launched.

She has two sister ships-the Hercules, build ing on the Tyne, which is to be launched in May, and the Orton, which will be launched st Portsmouth in July or August. The fourth ship la the armoured cruiser Iron, which will also be launched In August, at Devonport.

The Colossus is the first British Dreadnought to be built on the American principle. In modern Dreadnoughts the United States set an example in 1906-and has stuck to it even since which our own naval authorities have at last seen fit to follow.

In all our Dreadnought battleships so far completed the five turrets, with two guns in each, are placed in the form of a cross, one The rush for rubber abows no sign of stating. being at each extremity, and one between the Nearly every new iesus is enormously over intersection of the arma and the foot. Inside the Stock Exchange nothing more remarkable than the revolation wrought by the boom has ever been known.

A few months ago the jobbers dealing in rabber ehares could be numbered on the fingers of one hand, Dealers in American Console, and Kafirs would scarcely, deign to give them paasing nod. Now the American and Kaffir markets are practically deserted, while the jobbers in rubber have grown from five to five hundred.

Many of those in the American market are seizing the opportunity to take a holiday while rubber zeigas supremG.

The American ships, on the other hand, sil have their big gun turrets mounted on tho centre-line of the ship. In the Michigan and South Carolina there are four turrets, in the Delaware, North Dakota, Vtch, and Florida Eva, and in the Wyoming and Arkansas, recently laid down, six turrets.

In each case the centre-line arrangement has been followed, and by placing two tarretsone forward and one aft--at a higher lovel than the others a fore and aft fire of four anus is secur ed, while the full armament can be brought to bear on either broadside.

Then the Crown Prince intervened in the matter, and wrote this letter to the young count, dated Potsdam, January 11, 1907:

"Dear Mucki,Many thanks for your last lettar, from which I learn something in detail of your present life. Everything seems all right what you write. And you can beliers that your parents have not influenced me, but, nevertheless, yon cannot honourably go back upon your written, declaration. USEFUL HINTS.

An Express representative obtained from a prominent Mincing lane merchant on April 11th the following useful hints for studying a prospectus and judging the merits of a rubber company

Note carefully the names of the directors, and discover from one of the numerous hand booke to what extent success has attended other rubber concerns with which they are or have been associated.

The broker's name, if a good one, will be a strong guarantee of the soundness of the

company. :

Remember that rubber trees cannot be "tapped" until they are three and a half to four years old.

Take into consideration the fact that the price of rabber will decrease every year as the production increases.

A plantation with 100 trees to the Bore may yield as much as one with 200 trees, as overplanting tends to lessen the production: portation are important factors.
