THE NORDESTECHER" LLÄTY. The report of the Norddeutsche Lloyd in Bremen published last week, although on the whole satisfactory, is viewed with disappoint. ment in some quarters, in so for at least as the working of several of the lines shows no im- provement and as no provision has been made for the resorte funds that were completely absorbed last year. No dividland had been expected. On particulase becoming known the shares of the sompany dodined about 3 per cent, and are only slowly screvering. The emigrant traffic shows a decided im provement owing to the increasing demand for labour in the United States consequent upon the revival of trade in that country, 150,748 steerage passongers have been shipped accss the Atlantic, against 59,050 in the previous twelve months. The demand for cabin passages has likewise become more sotive towards the sad of the year, and the number already booked for the present Benson augurs well for the future.

The cargo business, too, has been on the mend, but progress has been somewhat checked during part of the summer by the uncertainty prevail ing with regard to the now tariff bill in the Statos; this difficulty having now been settled revival of the export trado with North America may be looked for. different parts of the world 20,175,974:00 The advance in the rate of discount in London last week, although unusual at this time of the year, was generally expected and therefore cansed no surprisa, but that it should have been thought ne cosenry to raise it a whole par cent., from 3 to 4 per cent created some semeation and is looked upon as a danger signal. It is explained by the fact that the abundance of money since the new year had favoured 'the issue of large exotic loans and others, and that the demand for gold for Russia and the United States was assuming alarming proportions, whilst the finan cial operations of the government, consequent upon the budget difficulty, added to the strain, Whether the stringonoy will increase and lead to a farther rise in the rate and whether the Reichsbank in Berlin will find itself obliged to follow suit is hard to say, at any rate speculation Las received a shook for the prosent and a dull Die prevails in the stock markets.

AERIAL COLUMBUS.

Dr. Gans Fabrico, the German seronaut, who intends to attempt to traverse the Atlantic Ocean in an airship, has given the following particulars of his scheme-

"I shall be accompanied by Herr Bruckner,

Franfurt newspaper, by a the editor of a Physician, and by one euginoor. I intend to tart about the middle of May from either Cadiz, Spain, or Teneriffe.

"This time of the year is chosen because then there is an easterly wind which blows from the European to the Amaridan continent con- an hour. It was to this wind that Columbus tinuously, and with a force of nearly thirty miles owed his sucess in discovering America.

"I desire to be an aerial Columbus, and, start- ng approximately from the same point, to be the first to reach America through the air. My course would lie Boross the Atlantic Ocena to Porto Rico, passing Cuba, and then across the Galf to New Orleans, The distanos of my course would be just over 4,000 miles.

"I estimate that I should cover this distance.

in five days. My airship now approuching completion is a combination of an ordinary bal loom and a dirigible airship. The length of the balloon section is 175 feet, and its diameter, which is cigar-shaped, is 50 feet. The motor is 40-horsepower.

Owing to the favourable wind which I shall utilise I only intend to use the motor in case of necessity, because it is not possible to take suficient bonzine to keep the motor going for five lays: The cubic contents of the balloon are quite sufficient to keep the airship aloft for 145 hours. That would be six days, or one day more than I require for the passage.

Perhaps the most interesting feasars of

In case of necessity this can be sailed on the ocean sa a moter-boat, and if I run short of benzine it can be sailed sa a sailing boat, because I shall take a portable mast with me,

"So far as human foresight can foreses, my enterprise mast noceed. A number of ships will be on the look-out for us between. European coasts and the West Indies,"

DUEL CAUSED BY A WIDOW.

A sensational duel, in which both combatants were over ninety years of age, took place on March 20th at Nikolsk Ussioraki, St. Petersburg.

Prince Suboteff, aged ninety-one, and M. warjanin, agot ninety-three, who owned the neighbouring estate, had been excellent friends for half a century. They were in the habit of meeting daily at the house of Me. Dejansky, a widow of forty

One day Princa Suboteff imagined that M. Wjarjanin was dirting with the widow, and a coldness sprang up hatween the men. After they had treated each other with studied polite ness for several weeks, a quarrel took place as they wore leaving Mme. Dejansky's residence,

Prince Enbotoff called his aged companion soxcomb, who should empty-headed. an

Mothers should early realize how essential good health is for the success of their child in after life. A badly nourished-Laby generally means an undersized child, wanting in stamina and vigour. If unable to nurse your baby, you must give the substitute that most closely resembles human milk No farinaceous or starchy food or unmodified cow's milk is permissible to a child under 67 months of age. The "Allenburys Milk Foods are so prepared as to remove the difference between cow's milk and human milk, and they are as easy of digestion as the natural food of the child

The "Allenburys" Foods are alike suitable for the delicate and robust, and, when used as directed, form the best means of rearing a child by hand. The No. 1 Milk Food may be given alternately with the mother's milk without fear of upsetting the child or causing digestive disturbance.
