DOMESTICATED LIONS,

THE MOON BY INVISIBLE LIGHT. / The views brought to our eyes in nature are lighted by a mixture of many kinds of roya, together known as white light, and by showing how some objects appear under the illumination of a single kind of raya-such as the infrared or ultraviolet-Prof. B. W. Wood, of Jobus Hopkins University, has opened a new fold to our vision. It is the invisible ultraviolet rays Beriswing andient and medieval menageries, reflected to us that have revealed something on Gustave Loisel, a French investigator, points the moon not hitherto seen. Such rays out that the large felines seem to have been affect the photographic plate, and plotares of completely tamed by the Indians, Persians, the moon were taken through a thickdy silvered Chaldeans and Assyrians. Similar photographs were asses. House-cate appear to have been first taken through a yellow screen. The ultraviolet domesticated by the Chinese, who also were the pictures have the bright craters quite a bright first to train cormorants for fishing: 64 the other pictures, but they also bring out a3shaped black depcsit near Aristarchus that seems never to have been made porpoptible by visible light. To get an idea of the character of this deposit, a study is being made of the ultraviolet rays roßfested from igneous rocks, volcanio ejecta, and other materials.

Each diamond was submitted in turn to the action of the X-ray while outside the tube, to that of the cathode mys when placed withju the tube, and finally to the action of hest. For the last experiment an electrically-bested muffle was used, with a thermometer showing the temperature up to 300 deg. C. The X-rays seemed to have no noticeable effect, but the cathode rays changed the white or light yellow to light brown, which prolonged action gradual ly deepened to dark brown. The artificia colouring thus givan seems to be permanent, as the diamond lately shown the Paris Academy had been kept without alteration for a year, ut times in the light and even in strong sunlight Heat of 300 deg. to 400 deg. C. had a decolours ing effect, bringing back artifeally coloured diamonds to their original colourlessness.

WEATHER REPORT.

The Hongkong Observatory yesterday issued the following report:

On the 5th at 12.10 p.m.-The barometer. has fallen moderately in E. Japan and risen slightly over W. Japan, the S. coast of China and Tongking.

A shallow depression, which appears to have developed over the Ses of Japan, is moving Eastwards over Hokkaido.

The high pressure area remains over China to

the North of the Yangtze Valley.

Fresh to strong N.E. and E. winds may be expected in the Formosa Channel and the N. part of the Chies, Sea

The forecast for the 24 hours ending at noon today is a fallows —— Hongkong & Neighbourhood (*) Formoss Channal...

The inoressing importance of the windmill suggests the need of records for each locality showing the amount of wind that can be expected each year at a moderate height. A consniar report calls attention to a windmill-14 feet in South coast of China between disnoter and 35 feet above the ground-that is in operation in a peat-bog nem Dunfermline, and is doing in less than an hour work that formerly employed four men az entire day of rain. ten hours. This windmill rarely, if over, conses moving. It is found safe to say that, st a height of 30 feet, a breeze of 10 to 15 miles an hour can. aot be depended upon with reasonable certainty in any part of Scotland except valleys and shel- tered spots, and the power offered is suitable for pumping, sawing, root-cutting, and Tation kinds of farm work. WHEN EARTHQUAKES COME, From 2,497 earthquakes recorded in the vicinity of the Austrian Alps, from 1897 to 1907, Dr. V. Conrad finds that shocks are much more frequent in March than in any other month and least frequent in June. The hour of greatest frequency is 2 a.m.

THE NEON LAMP,

A carious new light is being made the subject of hopeful experiment by G Clouds. The gas noon, discovered by Ramsay in the afinosphere, is specially distinguished for its chemical Inertness, but J: Norman Collie has made known a remarkable physical property that gives this element peculiar interest. A glass tabe enclosing a little mercury in neon at low pressure become strongly luminona on being shaken. Repeating the shaking at intervals during two or three hours, the light diminishes and then remains constant, but an electrio discharge through the tabe restores the original luminosity. Restoring to atmospheric temperature after one end has been heated to 7500 F. while the other end is cooled in liquid aic, the tube glowe much moro brightly than before in the part that had been hosted In a tube of fused quartz-instead of glass the luminosity is also strikingly increased. Other gases have given similar effects, but the inten- sity has been lass, the neon lamp being the one that has shown interesting promise.

BODY, TELEGRAPHY, The buman body has been used as a tale- graphic receiving instrument, and it is prodicted that such use may prove valuable in expargoner. In experiments of Prof. W. W. Holdme Goo before the Manchester Literary and Philosophi- cal Society, the messages from a distant rooms were read by a person standing in the electric
