THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, TUESDAY, APRIE 5TH, 1910.

THE RUBBER SUPPLY The concluding article of the series published by the Evening Standard in as antler:-

The present is not an inopportune time for considering the general isition of the rubbers producing industry as reflected in the public companies engaged therein, more particularly those operating in the Federated Malay States, where developments during recent months in respect of the floating of of new enterprises have been remarkable. As in all times of abnormal activity in firavolat und exploitation circles, if behoves the investing public very closely, to scrutinise the propositions inid before them for their participation, but the glamour which | surronude a new undertaking issued with a prospectus which appeals to the imagination teo often proves an irresistible temptation to laxity In boom times the speculative investor is not inclined too closely to scratintas financial statements and estimates of potential profits, and the inevitable sequence is

of val regrets. This is always the cast when a beom sets in. Properties which in cold blood no sezo person would--as the phrase goes “look at” are foated off on the public on extravagant torms, and as far as can be seen nobody for the time-like the Jackdaw of Rheimsms a penny the worse. It is not necessarily to be ia forrad from this that the prosent condition of the rubber share market is unsound, but the market valuation of the shares of a good many non-pro- ducing companies has pretty well discounted the existing high price of rabber and the prospe tive prosperity which a maintenance thereof may be expected to ensure. Indeed, the ea thusiasm engendered by optimism has lifted prices in some directions to a level justified by famine conditions in the staple, and the result of the boom tow in evidence is being esen in the daily flotations and the wild rash of the pablis to secure a share of the good (and other. wise) things laid before thens.

Thara arwather and very important consideren tions, however, bender the number of frees planted to be faken into acount in appraising the merits of a rubber, property, for instance, the age of the trees, the yield of subsidiary oropa, such as papper, taploon, oscoenats, and so forth, and the acreage held in reserve. The Allagar Estate, for instance, has 10,000 trees targablo out of its 90,000, the Anglo-Malay Company) 146,000 tappable out of its 556,000, Carey United 53,000 tappable out of 100,000, and so on. As to the reserved gereage, this is a very important matter indeed, and it deserven, to be noted in passing that the reserves in some cases largely exceed tho ares in nee. It may be pointed out that

the total authorised capital of the sbora list of companies is about £5,250,000, which works out at an average capitalisation per tres of 9s, there being about 11 million trees in onltivation, The divergence between this and the authorised capital per tree shown in the list arises from's number of coures: potentialities, proximity of tapping period, age of trees, valné of subsidiary crops, and so forth. As to.

the wron of ground in reserve, reckoning from the return of the companies listed above, it largely exceeds that in cultivation, the respective figures being 85,000 acres in cultivation and 120,000 acres in reserve, Details of a few of the more important companies in this regard are given bolew arou

Investors, in considering the price of shares, should not overlook the enormous capital: appreciation which has already taken place: There are 23. shares selling to-day at close upon £3 each, an appreciation of nearly 3,000 per cart., and premiums of hundreds per cent. are na common as blackberries in September. It is conceivable that there may be instances in which suck an enormous rise is justified on a commer nial basis, bat experience gained during many "booms in produce and shares must impel a feeling of ssation regarding a further general uplifting of prices. The following shows the face vaino of some representative Federated Malay Blatos shares, appropriate market price, and the premium which the latter shows over the former:

Dispassionate judgment rather inclines to the opinion that we are not far from the time when any sort of property, with any sort of trees and any sort of local conditions, favourable or the reverse, and all of which are unknown to the applicant for shares, and se to which the promoters of the un- ertaking are reticent, will be good enough for the public. For

For people are certainly, in fishing parlance, cu the food, and rubber haited hooks are being gorged. The capacity for sound judgment by the man in the street is becoming impaired, and there are not wanting Indications that it will also become necessary to use the utmost warises in the selection of new enterprises if the capital investor is to be pro- Berved intact. Vendors are beginning to require a larger proportion of their consideration money in cash and a lesser proportion in shares that they did, prospectus statements are baldez and lees convinning to the reason, though not lessstimulat ying to the imagination, while public revenue is deriving benefit from the number of unsolicited prospectuses which reach the suburban house- holder through the course of post, Those things in themselves and taken separately may little, but taken in conjunction with one another and with the present activity in the rubber share market they give rise to the suspicion that the time has almost arrived for a halt to be called

It is quite possible for rubber itself to maintain its present strong position a position which; within limits, seems to be assured for s couple of years or sand for the rubber share market to sustain nasty jura, hence are desirable and discrimination caution qualities for the investor to cultivate. The recent rush for shares in new enterprises has been suficiently violent of itself to cause s development of caution, During January and February about 150 new rubber companies were registered, with an average capitalisation of about £100,000, but the appetite for shares is not entiated, and so great has been the run on the more favoured undertakings that in one case it was decided not to allot more than twenty shares to any applicant, excepting the 300 shares necessary to qualify the director, In another instance the capital was subscribed more than twenty times over, and offelal an nouncements that the applications amounted to many times over the amount required have
