le coming to him. And the generous response contains the nonal cautious reminder in its tail. We may be sure, however, that when pay day comes along Bill will remember the timely loan, and will meet his obligations “like a gont.” Let us watch him on this eagerly expected pay day. He is serving in one of our first-class ertisers on the China Station, To meet the exigencias of the weathor officers and mon nra cladn white duck clothing, with nothing much more. on beside the regulation garments, we may be sure. During the forenoon the feet paymaster and his staff have bean busily getting ready the bags of shining silver dollars that pass as cur reney throughout the East. These dollars are made up. in lots of a thousand, each lot in its coarsely Woven straw bag, and are securely stored below in a massive steel chest. Only the fleet pay master keeps the lays of this chest, and by the regalations he must wear them on his person night and day. Already the amounts due to each one of the ship's company, from the ceptafu down to the smalleet Chinese steward's hoy, hava been calculated and entered upon the proper lists. Those that have picked up slops, or in other words, taken up clothing, from the Service stock, have had their amounts reduned by the cost thereof. All half-pay, er money allotted ench month to wires and friends at home, has been deducted, and the final amounts due to each man are ready to be marked off as he sweeps his into his car when passing round the bit

The weather, though warm, is as is as one could wish for in the cool of the evening it will be delightful on shore. Leave is to be granted to all who can be spared to-night, so what wonder if an antici- patory thrill stirs the whole ship's company as the forenoon drags out its length of necessary routine werk. Presently the pipes. the boatswain's mates twitter out the summons to the mid-day meal, and the upper decks are temporarily deserted. At half-past twelve, one bell in the afternoon watch, another pipe rings

the ship's company are fallon in quarter-deck in their respective divisions. At one end is a small wooden table literally groaning under the sight of rows of silver dollars Hers thoy are, piled up in lots of twenties and tens, and a half-emptied bag of loose ouer is there as well. A Chinese washerman coining on board to collect the soiled linen is struck slack at the sight of so much wealth openly isplayed: he has probably never seen so many dollars in all his life before. The feet paymaster 'nad his assistants are there with books and penclis, and all is ready to proceed. The come mander appears, with the ubiquitous, telescope under his arm, to witness the payment, the master-at-arms barks out an order, and the men start to fle round the table in order.
