FERTILIZERS FROM THE AIR. -
Calciam dyansitide, or nitroline, contains 20 per cant. of fized nitrogen, and is prepared by the action of nitrogen on a mizigre of lime and carbon. Experiments have shown its fortilizing value to be about four-fifths of that of Chile Faltpoter. Among the newer nitrous products is sitride of aluminum, which M. Serpek, of Malkansen, Alsace, makes by first converting alumina and carbon into carbide of aluminum in the electric furnace, then adding a fresh quantity of alumina, and treating the mixture with nitrogen gas. The resulting mass, with 20 to 24 per cent. of nitrogen, can be used at ones në fer- tilizer, while crystallized nitride of aluminum has been obtained, with ne much as 34 per cent. of nitrogen. This material has certain ad. vantages, but the claim is made that calcium nitrate, or air saltpetar, is in some respects the most promising of the new numerous substanses firing the air's ultrogen in fertilizer. The nitrogen is oxidized in the electric sus, and it has been found to be possible to offert the dicoot absorption by mill of lime of the resulting gases, thus obtaining calcinu uitrate, or calcium nitrite, aqual to Chile saltpeter without further treatment This procese uses no coal, being dependent on water power, and the nitrogen is taken direct from the air.

A BIT OF GERMAN SCIENCE. Solontido forestry in Germany has raised the average yield of wood per acre from 30 cubic feet in 1830 to 65 enhic foot in 1904, trebling the proportion of sawa timber secured from the average cut. The money returns per acre were increased myen-fold in 54 years The German Empire now has nearly 35,000,000 acres of forest, about 32 per cent, belonging to the State, and the forests were never before in so good. condition, NE
COFFERED STEEL,
Copper-plated steel has been found, in the tests of recent months, to withstand the uenial methods of working metals. The two welded metals have practically the same flow, and 03. rolling their relative thickness is preserved unchanged: The material resista eprrosion like copper, while nuder certain conditions it has proven as strong as stoel, or even stronger.

OUR TWO-SIDED BODIES.
It is sometimes noticed with surprise that the two hands or the two feet are nasqual, one being larger than the other or differently developed, and this asymmetry in the right and left halves of the body has been the curions subjent of romarch of Prof. E. Gaupp, of Freiburg. From extensive inquiry, he coneladoz that the inequality is normal and a sign of progressota, defect, as Bichat regarded it a century ago. The asymmetry of this head- spina, chest and limbs is not present af birth, hat appears with adaptation to surroundings, and each individual seems to have inborn tendencies to right-handed and · left-handed - effort. The asymmetry develops with the varying was and disuse of the sides. A marked degree a recorded in the face by ancient soulptors, has the greatest inequality represents. the greatest advance in evolution, and the "brain" of Europeans shows more variation in the two gides than that of negroes, still more than that of the anthropoids.
USING THE LANTERNS OF FISHER."* Luminous organs have been supposed to be- long to fishes of the deep ses only, not to those of shallow waters. In the Malay Archipelago, however, the shallow waters of a coral reef have been found to contain two fishes-Anomalops kateptron and Photoblepheron palpebratus--with. a light-giving org on as a large oral body be Death the eye, and the light seems to serve in | luring crustaces and other animals on which the fiches prey. The native Malays ootally out out the Inminous organs to attach to balted books for catohing other fish, the omission of light under such conditions continuing reveral hours. Dr. Otto Stache, the German naturalist who has just described these fishes, has been able to keep specimanë in captivity, and has made an in- teresting study of the luminpus organ.
STONE SURFACED WOOD. The wood-treating process known as "Bidariz. ing" is claimed to have the advantages of being long, imparting no odour, and having no offoot on couleur. The wood is first impregnated with a hot salation of an iron salt, and after cooling is then deposited in hot water-gloss, Near the surface the wood thus becomes filled with an iron silicate, absolutely insoluble in water. - The iron salt penetrating to the interior greatly

· WEIGHING THE MOTORKEN, Much power may be saved in electztó railway running by avoiding the patting on of brakes when possible, and permitting the car to coast at every opportunity. It follows that motor. men must differ greatly in eo onomy of working. A now apparatus koops an automatic record. and is a test of motorman efficiency Apopor ribbon driven by clockwork receives the tracing By suitable connection, the device is made to operate only when both the electrical controller- and the air brakes are in the "off" position, and the record made is for the time when no power is being used. The ribbons give a good indication of the relative working of diffe ent men on the same line, The records not only enable the companies to gauge their employees, but they incite the motorman to save power by
arting whenever it is practicable to do so.
The Commission appointed to report põu the question of taxation in Berlin says that there are now no fewer than 1,256 “million- aires" in Berlin.
