BANDOM REFLECTIONS.
It has often been claimed as one of the advantages of life in Hongkong that it removes one from the alzite and bitterness of party polition. This is undoubtedly trus, and what- Over OnXINGS may sunder friendships here they are seldom if ever due to political or even theo logical disputes. Politically we are a happy famly. We mostly favour the one party,
Still, it is surprising under those conditions, to find the great interest which has been aroused In the General Election at Home, and political discussions have become the rule instead of the exception during the past week or two.
The Hon. Mr. Murry Stewart ought to feel pleased that his protest with regard to the tn sightly piece of land in Status Square has not boen without effect, The drawing office is being. demolished, and the process of "tidying up" to which the Colonial Secretary referred has began.
Sir Henry May is to be congratulated on his Iatat contribution to the Eterature of sport in the Colony. His story of Mr. Hough in certainly too good to be fort. There wAI, however, one thing in the book which set me thinking In previous years there were races for native ridare, but such events do not appear on the card now. I have not heard why they ware discontinued, and the only reason which cccurs to me is the possibility of the riders having been "got at and introducing an undesirable feature in the clean record of the Jockey Club.
Native riders however, do most of the training, and this reminds me that training now in in full swing for the anaus! race meeting. We are now within a month of the meeting, and Wednesday and Saturday mornings will find a growing number of spectators at the rails to watch the performances of the ponina. It Is early yet to form opinions about the ponies, lot it suffice for the present to say that there are not a few that are likely to give a good socount of themselves at the coming meeting.
Seldom does the Supreme Court offer the attraction that it has done during the past week. The entertainment appealed especially to the ladies, who enjoyed the revelation of domestic infelicities which should never have gone beyond the four walls of the home. As has been sagely remarked before, honours in these cases are usually easy.
Hongkong has advanced remarkably in the realm of sport during the past two years. Not only has interest in football received a Billip from the inauguration of the League competition and the Football Association buttannia has developed
In like manner sinos the League competition was started. The latest event in sport is the bowl ing championship of the Célony which has just bonu concluded and won by, perhaps, the young- est player in Hongkong.
It seems remarkable that a comparatively inexperienced bowler should overcome so many older players, but after all, lawn bowls in simple game which should be easily mastered by anyone of ordinary intelligence. Once the art of delivering the bowl is sequired, and the pars bolle motion in understood, only practice is noeded to give the bowler that skill which en ables him to draw, drive, or cover as the locality of his opponent's woeds may determine,
I am not writing without knowledge when 1 say that our local theatrical amateurs are likely to do as well with the forthcoming production By any they have ever done.. A number of now faces will be noticed on the stage to-night, and the general impression will be that the A.D.C. have been strengthened considerably by the acquisitions gained. The Toreador" will be a triumph for the A.D.0, and for the American lady who takes the leading role.
