A specics of whale that seems to cominit suicide Jas been brought to the notice of the Paris Academy of Belionco by Edmund Perrier. These whales are 16 feet long, have only two teath, and are so rare that only 28 have been known, only a single specimen having been pre- served. They come ashore only in pairs, and if either male or female in killed, the death of the other promptly follows.

Tho zneasiness of animals before earthquakes has suggested to A. Maccioni, an Italian, that the nervous system may be affected by electric waves coming from earthquake centres a little in advance of the mechanical shooks. Aeting on this theory, he has devised a detector for such waves, using a coherer sensitive to all ware lengths, which is connected by wire to an upright metal plate in the ground, and is in eircuit with a battery and a sensitive galvano. meter or relay. When olostric waves from the earth are received, the relay closes the circuit of a strong battery ooting upon a registering mechanism, a clock and a ball. Recording the ordinary mechanical shocks by means of a very sensitive seismograph, two earthquake more ments were observed on April 11, and it was found that from a contre of disturbance fourteen miles away the electrio waves, were made known four minutes before the arrival of the mechanical waves. Though the new instra ment is being first applied to earthquake study, it should prove of life-saving value in giving warning of dangerous shocks.
"Melted wood," first produced 17 or 18 years ago, was forgotten after having been recorded as a scientific curiosity. A Franch coal mine has been remarkable for its emissions of carbon dioxide. The most violent entrash occurred in July, 1907, immediately followed the explosion of five pounds of dynamite in eight blasts in a somm of coal at the bottom of a shaft 1,000 foot deep. Dost in great quantities was thrown ont for an hour and a half, the outflow of gas con- tinuing twelve hours. Three workmen were suffocated, occupants of neighbouring houses showed symptoms of asphyria, and over au Possession ares of country about 3,300 feet long and 1,600 foot wide, chickens, dogs and birds wore killed by the gas. From the surface of the ground 523 tons of very fine coal dust were collected, the wind having probably carried away as much more. The dust covered the machinerom, sixty foot from the mouth of the shaft, to dre depth of a yard; and penetrated to workings50) feet from the shaft. From the, various galleries of the min nearly 3,000 tons of coal dust were taken. The coal seam pene trated was about sixty feet tluck, and the great quantity of gas liberited has been attributed to this unusual thickness and the large area covered by the simultaneous blasts.
