Late inquiries in Europe make it evident tluk aporfort method for making wond and textiles uninflammable is yet to-be found. bat many fire- prooflug substances have been used, the most common being phosphates, thagstates, borites and particularly ammonineal salts, boric acid, chlorides of calcium, agussium and zinv, and silicate of sodim. Studying the effect on Ussues, Lochtin, a German chemist, has found that profurence should be given to sulphate of ammonia, phosphate of ammonia, chlorides of ammonia and zinc, alam, boras, boric acid, and a precipitate of aluminate of sodium known as atumin. The first three and al min gave the best results. The ammoniacal sults, volatilizing under hont, form completely incombustible mixtures with the combustible. gases, and the same is true of chlorides of calcinin, magnesium and zine, bat the notion of alumin is purely mechanical. Some sults often tried--such as phosphates of lime and magnesia, tungstate of ammonia, and sulphate of magnesia -have little effect. Others actually increase combustibility, and these include, acoviding to
The new ozonizing plant at St. Maur, near at a cost of somewhat less than five cents thousand feet Ozone generators of the Sie- mens type are operated by a high-tension alternating oircuit, obtained by transforming the enxreat of a 110-volt alternator, which is driven by 44 horse-power steam engine. No trace of nitrous oxide or other harmful product from the apparatus can be found in the steri- lized water. The great advantage of ozone as a purifier is that it adds to the water only oxygen, and this aids in soration.

One of the most interesting of Amarican col onies was established a for months ago at Guildford, in Surrey, where Old England has heen solicitously guarding it. Early in the spring seventeen specimens of the American robin (Merula migratoria) were imported, and, after a few weeks in an open-air aviary, most of them were liberated about the middle of Juue The birds at once mated and began nest building in the trees.
The colony now includes between forty and fifty old and young robins, and these are being closely watched, in the hope that liberal foeding may overcome their migratory instinct, and prevent them from flying away and becoming hopelessly scattered on the approach of cold weather. Their cheery note interpreted as "Kill'em, cure em, give en physic "—has endeared them to the human neighbours about their new home.

The conversion of the steam shovel into this electric shovel is a somewhat unexpected evolu tion, but two 120 ton muclines used in limestone quarrying by a Chicago firm have the hoisting and the digging movement controlled by separate Sir Ernest Paget, Mr. H. Tylston Hodgson and motors of 200 and 80 horse-power, respectively. Each motor has an automatic magnetic switch controller, protecting against varying load, and giving great, accuracy of operation. A reel in the cab carries a feed 'cable, which can be connected to a fixed conductor at any convenient place, and the machine is moval by its own power. Fower operators are necessary than for the steam shovel, while there is important gain in the dropping of water and fol.
