FUNERAL OF THE GRAND EMPRESS DOWAGER

A BRILLIANT SPECTACLE.

No finer tribute has been accorded in more than a thousand years to the memory of an Empress of China than the magnificance of the funeral of the late Grand Empress Dowager, which took place on the 9th inst.. says the Poking correspondent of the N-C. Daily News. Crowds of foreigners witnessed the procession from

pavilions erected inside the Tungchihoon area. At 7.m. these pavilions were filled wit onlookers, although the cortege did not pass until 9.15 a.m.

The court will hoar wituesses for the defence. The defendants gave evidence along the lines sight witnesses testified to their belief in the outlined by the address of their counsel, and

THE NEW DOVER HARBOUR.

The new Admiralty Harbour at Dover was, formally opened by the Prince of Wales with great ceremony on October 15. Although a small commercial harbour sul on Admiralty Pior had been constructed at Dover, it was not until the end of the your 1895 that the many proposals for the construction of a national and režuge harbour in Dover Bay assumed definite shape. The contract for the carrying out of the present scheme was let in Nurember, 1897. The sokome has included an extension of the Admiralty Pier by 2,000 ft., the formation of re- clamation work at the eastern and of Devor town, extending in the direction of St. Margaret Bay for 3.900 ft., protecting arm from the eastern end of the reclamation into the open sea to a dis tauca of 2,900 ft, and an island breakwater 4,200 ft. long. The low water area enclosed by this schema is 610 uores, making with the 80 acres. constituting the commercial harbour a total harbour water arex ut Dover of 690 acres, which fe believed to be the largest area of open sea yet The Prince Regent, Prince Ching, the high enclosed by solit masonry work to form a har officials of the Wainupu and the foreign diplo.bour of refuge. The depth of water in which the operations have had to be conducted made it necessary to carry on work under compressed air practically during the whole period of building the underwater structures. On the eastern arm of the broak water the foundations had to be prepared in diving bells, which descended to a depth of 70 ft. and required a prossura of 35 lb. to the square inch in the bell.

All arrangements for the funeral were carried oat by the Wairan in an excellent manner.

From the Peking Daily News wo learn that the Waiwapn drew up two Programmes of Ceremonies to be performed by the Diplomatic Body, The first related to the visit to the Palace arranged for the 6th inst. before the removal of the remains of H. As the eastern arm and the Admiralty Pier extensions are to be used for berthage, they have been provided with sheltering parapets, but the south breakwater has not so far been so pro vided. The south breakwater was made a

Mounted officers were to be despatched by the Waiwupo to take the Foreign Ministers and their suites in sadan chairs or on horse-back to the Palace via the Tung Hus Men gate. In front of the Palace S ud they were to dismount and walk on foot to the tea shed in the Imperial Arrow Pavilion. At 10a.m. the ministers of the Waisupu were to accompany them, according to a pre-arranged order to the Hsi Ching Man, the Wang Chi Min,, and then the Ning Slion Men. When arriving at the front of the Wang Chi Place they were to make a detached work, owing to the need of AD castern bow and outer and then inako anather ball as a western entrance to the harbour, to before the Imperial Suorificial Table.
