For Asthma
"Had no attack
since using it."
52 Norfolk Street, Rotherham.
Dear Sirs, have suffered from asthma for the past seven years, having attacks come on every month, which prevented me from getting my breath freely. As I am in the theatrical. business, you will understand what a drawback this means. I was advised about a month ago by a brother professional to try Angier's Emulsion, and the rellol I bave gained is perfectly astonishing. I believe there is no sure care for asthma, but. I, must advise other sufferers to try Anger's, and so get the relief I have obiained. I have not had a single attack sinco using it. You are at liberty to pablish this letter, and I trust it may be the means of helping others to get
(Signed) VAL GULLY. the same happy relief as yours faithfully,

HEALING AND STRENGTHENING.
Those who are subject to attacks of bronchial asthma will find great relief from the regular use of Angier's Emulsion. This remedy com haos the remarkable healing properties of our special petroleum with the tonic properties of the hypophosphites, and is therefore both soothing and strengthening.
It not only
relieves the cough and breathing, allays bronchial irritation and promotes easy expec toration, but it keeps the digestive organs. healthy and has a wonderfully invigorating influence upon the general health. Angier's Emulsion is invaluable in lang affections, -digestive disorders, nervous affections and all
wasting diseases.

THE SILVER NARKET.
The subjoined extracts aro ta' en from Messrs Samuel Montagu and Co.'s Intasi circular :---
The Chinese Government has decided to forbid the curronoy of foreign paper money in China after five years. The quotations of silver for Eeptember show cuusiderable steadiness, with a total variation of only one farthing. The price, which was inclined to become heavy at 231, stiffened on purchases by China madala Bombay and afterwards in this market. The vident difficulty which China has to dispens with the assistance of silver, even though the stock in Shanghai stands at the abnormal figura of 250 lakhs, crestes a certain amount of con-

groap. Now the United States' purchases of sik amount to 83 millions, and Fronoh purchases to 2 millions, while England takes only a quarter of a million's worth. Moreover, whereas France and England drink practically no Japanese tea, the people of the United States take one million out of a total production of 14 million. In short, if raw silk and tea be excluded, the transactions of Great Britain and the United States show a striking similarity, for the former's purchases rango over 295 staples, and the latter's over 305. As for the remarkable growth of the export trade Asia, its prominent features are that China buys about 4f millions' worth of cotton yarn, while the Leased Territory (in Maneharia) and Koren purchase prodnoo to the extent of some tive millions, an amount which promises to ineroso largely in the future. In- deed, the salient feature of Japan's commerce with her Oriental neighbours is that she is gradually inducing them to purchase her various manufactures in ever-growing numbers, though in comparatively small quantities. Probably a long time must elapse, however, before she succeeds in undersolling hor Western compoti- tors in Eastern markets. It was supposed, a few years ago that as her matches had practi- cally monopolized the field in several regions of the Orient, her cotton yarns would be equally successful in China; but results have not verified that forecast. The rivalry between Indian yarns and Japanese yarns in Chins has hitherto resulted largely in favor of the former.
NATIVE-OWNED SHIPPING,
A very striking feature is the steady devolop. ment of Japan's capacity to do her own oversea carrying trade :-

The extraordinary growth which began in the quinquennial interval 1893-8 is due to the fact that in 1896, after her war with China and after the compulsory rendition of the Lis Peniusala, Japan, appreciating UINTE numerous flest of fraud, he must remain powerless to infnnoo the destinies of Asia,

She now devotas 14 million sterling yearly to subsidies and her steam era collect from foreign shippers freight to the extent of three millions. No doubt can exist that this large development of Japan's mercan- tile marine has greatly checked the growth of Great Britain's carrying trade with the Far East The following table shows the growth in the last decade of native and foreign ship- Ping in Japan's carrying trade:

maineil stationary this Japanese incursión must have been sovorely felt by foreign mid- dlemen and foreign shipowners. But although the Japanese now virtually divide with their foreign competitor the conduct of commerce and the business of carrying he moiety still remaining to the foreign middleman in the former case is more than twice the amount of 20 увать times the amount. Thus there is not yet felt years ago, and in the latter case is nearly four. any acute sense of a declining buik of business; though a vague apmohcasion of what the future have in stora cortainly exists, especially in view of the fact that less than two years hence Japan will be at liberty to apply a protective tariff, if she be so minded

It used to be asserted, especially in Consular reports, that British manufacturers' interests would be better served by sending direct re presentatives to Japan than by relying on the resident middleman. Certainly that is true with regard to highly specialized kinds of work. But in the vast majority of cases the resident to be desired in point middleman leaves nothing of industry, shrewdness, and enterprise, to N.E. winds, which qualities he adds the invaluable advantage fresh; fine. of experience. So, too, a fashion prevailed some N.E. winds, years ago of extolling the German at the ex- pense of his Anglo-Saxon rival. Events have not justified that discrimination. Admirable. as the German undoubtedly is in science, and theory, recent records do not show that the Anglo-Saxon has much to learn from him as a practical man of business.
