The Chief Justice and the Paisns Judge delivered their judgments on the point reserved so to special damagas in the action at the instance of the Hongkong Milling Company, of which Mr. H. Pery Smith is liquidator, against Mesere. Arnhold, Karborg and Co...

The Chief Justice in the course of his judg. ment said that assuming the defendants to be bound by Mr. Axides admission, it did not carry the plaintiffs' claim for loss of profits consequent on the cancellation of the qontract with. It is evident that there is a demand for foreign goods of many descriptions, if they can be supplied at prices which are within reach the people. Another opening for foreign enter prise might be in the way of amusements, which seemed strangely lacking. The few simple toys were eagerly bought for the children, and a gramophone on a Cantonese stall attracted large crowds.

DEPRESSED MERCHANTS.

This year the gravest apprehensions were felt with regard to the mocess of the meeting. The Jocal traders have hitherto depended on their supply of opium to tempt buyers from Canton and Hunan, who have, in the past, brought much as £30,000 a year in silver, taking mainly opfum in exchange. This year the crowds at the fair were reported to be unusually large, but the local merchants stated that the business done was the smallest known for many yes and it was generally felt that the great fair, an the commercial feature of the frontier districts, would be doomed unless they could flad some new product which would bring silver into the country.

The total turnover this year was reported to be only 80,000 to 90,000 tails (sbont £12,000), and the merchants left for their homes in groat depression, with large quantities of their goods unsold.
