The event of the wook was, of course, the arrival of Lord Kitchener, who seemed to have a pretty good time. Nobody would have od a hobby outside of his military dates, but Hongkong has discovered that he is a collector of Chinese porealain and a connoisseur to boot, as his experiences in the curio shops proved. Lord Kitchener, when he paid his surprise visit to the Rajputs quarters, commented on the uniform whiteness of the bedsheets possomed by the soldiers. Isn't a white bedsheet some- thing of a luxury? I doubt if the Tommies, on the Hongkong side are provided with white

Various explanations have been offered for the unexpectedly high tendors for the Opium Farm, but it seems to me the reason is not far to seek. Trade in the Colony is improving. In practically every department the upward tendency is experienced, and it is not unnatural to suppose that those who have contracted the opium habit will havo more money to spend than they have had during the last year or two.

Some inquisitive falks want to know now that the loss on opius is not so great as was exported-if the liquor duties will be decreased ? "I hae ma doots."

I am not the only one who has marrelled at the farce of employing Indian watchmen to sleep on premises. The business men of this Colony surely don't engage those usurions sons of Ind from philanthropic motives, or becaues they believe that they are useful. Some of them, I admit might have been ornamental. at one time when their turbans were clean, but most of them liave got beyond that stage. It may be that our taipans are so conservative that they cannot break away from "olo custom," but whatever the explanation, there seems littin reason for perpetuating the larce as we know it. Only the other day two Indian watchmen

POLICE RECREATION CLUÂ.

The annual meeting of the Police Recreation club was held at the Club matshed, Happy Valley, on Saturday afternoon, when Mr. J. W Hansen presided over a large attendance of members.

The SECRETARY read the notice calling the meeting.

The CHAIRMAN stated that as they were on the threshold of a new year they had to render, an account of the Club's doings, and show how it stood. They could congratu- late themselves on the Colony's immunity from typhoons this year, as in s prèvions yasr when. a typhoon swept Hongkong it razed the Club matshed to the ground. They had had a saccessful year in games of all kinds, and the speaker took the opportunity of thanking Mr. King for the bats he had presented for last year's batting, and which were won by Lance Sergeant Edwards. (Applause). The Club were now in the fortunate position of having prizes offered by Mr. Wodehonse for cricket, teumis and bowls. (Applanse). Financially the Club had had a very good year, and as the balance sheet had no doubt been digested by all members he did not think it necessary to refer to it, but would moes the adoption of the report and accounts.

But this plan is confronted by a legal difficulty, namely, that such shares can not be issued until the total capital is paid up, whereas 3,600,000 yen remains to be paid and could not possibly be called up at present. It is diflout to see therefore how this plan could be carried out. It includes a project for spreading over a period of 10 years the customs

The immediate consequence, of course, great rise in the price of the drug which neces- sarily falls most heavily on the poorer class of smoker, though against this may be put the slightly cheaper price of foodstuffs due to the larger quantity of land-bearing grain, etc. I have been told, however, that land which has been long under the poppy bears poor grain for
