GERMANY'S NEW FLEET.

SUPER-DEEADNOUGHTS.

To the dockyard of Villemastos belongs the. honour of having laid down and launched the Brat of that great feet of Dresdnoughts which is to guarantee that if the fature of Germany does indeed Is on the water" Germany shal not lack strength to eveure it. The battleship Nissan was laid down at this yard in October, 1907, and feel the water in the following March.

Hitherto the statement has been occospted in England that she was laid down in July, 1907, but this is incorrect. It is true that when the Nassau was launched she was little more than a shell, but the authorities had an object in view in getting her off the stocks as quickly as pos

sible.

Like Portsmouth and Devonport, Wilhelms litven has only one slip on which Dreadnought cad be built. This slip, firat scanpied by the Nassau, was not scepted, either in length or in other respects, to take the larger type of ship have been followed; and with which the Nassaus har therefore it was necessary to get the Nassau afloat as soon as possible so that the slip might be prepared in time for the laying down of the next ship without any delay.

TEX SURER SHIPS.

This was the Ersatz. Oldenburg, which was laid down in the first week of October last year, and will be launched in the presence of the Kaiser either on the 18th or the 25th of September. She will have bosa on the stocks nearly twelve months; but I am informed that her launching weight will approximate to 10,000 tons, which I believe I am right in saying is considerably in excess of any ship built in a British dookyard, with the possible areeption of the Dreadnought, which was "rushed.”

The completed displacement of the ship will bo 19,000 tone—that is, slightly less than that of the St. Vincent,

She will, however, be strikingly more powerful than

that ship. In her and bar two sisters the Erants Siegfried and Ersatz Beowulf which are to be launched in November, the German Admiralty bas for the first time since 1880 adopted the 12-inch gun, the 9.4 and 11-inch having been mounted for nearly thirty years in this capacity, Not only, however, will twolvo gans of this calibre be mounted as compared with the ten of the St. Vincent, but it is a far more powerful weapon than the British.

gun

The shell of the St. Vincent's 12-inch wigle 850lbs. That of the German gun will weigh no less than 9921ba.

Considerable difficulty was experience. getting her along owing to shallowness of th riger. During the passage of the Westfalan all trafic along this part of the river, was auspended.

The crew will go on beard at Nordenham, and the trial trip will then be carried out in the North Sea. Captain Goedke has assumed command of the Batulenaip.

A HUMAN TORPEDŐ.

AMERICAN NAVAL VFFICER'S DARING EXPERANET.

A few weeks ago, says the Manila Cablenetes, Lieutenant Kenneth Whiting. of the U. S Navy, in command of the submarine Parposis: at Cavite, performed an act which for absolute daring and high courage will remain unequalled.

Wishing to demonstrate for the benefit of officers and men who go to sea in submarines that there is a possibility to escape from those Fesses in case they sink, und to tally disregarding the danger of death which threatened lini, leutenant Whiting had himself ejected from the Forpoiss while she lay at the bottom of the bay and arose safely to the top. He refused absolately to let any other maz on the vessel make the experiment, as hesaid that being in command he deamed it proper that he himself do it

bottom, about sixty to seventy feet deep. When the Porpoise had been lowered to the Whiting crawled into a torpedo tube which was then closed up. In a submarine the tube is opened on the outside by a port which is operated by powerful machinery from the the tube and it was feared the inrnah of this ship. There is a tremendous rush of water into water might imprison Whiting in the tube, drowning him before he could escape,

Fortunately, this was not the case. Whiting

red as good held on the port inside the tube and shot out with it. When the port was managed to get clear of the waction of the in opened he shot forward with powerful strokes, coming water and shot to the anrface. In the raised her to the top and were lonking meantime the officers of the submarine had uriously about for the lieutenant. saw

They short distance away swim- ming towards the ship, and he was hoisted the officers and crew. aboard aid the chears and congratulations of

strates that it is possible to escape from a sunken Lieutenant Whiting's experiment demons submarine if the machinery is in good working order, but it also shows that one man must die, ziz: the one who must remain behind to operate the machinery while the rest escape from the Aube.

I saw the Nassen quite plainly, although I was not permitted to go on board. There is nothing startling, as has been suggested, in the arrangement of her guns. The twelve 11-inch weapons are paired in turrets, two being placed on the contre-one forward and one aft, and one. at each corner of the superstructure--if One can dignity with that name the very scanty amount of upper works which has been allowed to stand.
