The four detective sergeants kept watcü en the Clab until dawn, but no one entered or left, and nothing eventful happened until the arrival, a little after 5 am., of Sub-Inspector Jebaston, with P. C's George, Engley, Buckley, Taylor and Mitehall, all armed with revolvers, an reRIL- : forcements. The inmates of the Club stil! refused to open the gate, and it was therefore decided to rask the place. Led by Sub-Inspan. tor Johnston, the police climbed over the gale into the compound, and there they found a Caban subject named J. Castanada, who, sping that farther resistance was useless, unbarred the gate. He was immediately arrested and searched, and concealed in his right sleeve the police foxnd ahsary 44 Colt revolver, loaded in four chambers and with an empty cartridge shell in the Afth. This confirmed the suspicion that it was Castanada who had fired at the police at midnight.

by Sergeants Kennerley and Brewster, and P.C.'s Engley and George, but before he was caught he had reached his goal, and whipped out a .32 calibre Ivor-Johnson revolver from under his pillow. A desperate struggle ensued. Owing to the confined space afforded by the hat, police had the greatest difficulty in holding their man, and though they gave him no time to raise his weapon, before it was wrenched from his hand he had discharged the contents of one cham ber into Sargeant Kennerley's leg. The ballet entered just below the left knee, and taking a downward course, remained embedded in the fash of the calf. The revolver was taken away, but the Sikk continued to ight like a demon. He, but right through the muscle of P. C. George's left arm, bit Sergeant Brewster on the haul, und severely bruised P. C. Engley, whe showed great pluck throughout the struggle. Eventusity the golice had to use their batons to overpower the man.'

While this Talian was being overpowered, a second watchman entered the fray, armed with a stick, to assist his comrade. As he was

running across the compound he was fired, sty and missed, at

short range, by P. O, Buckley. He reached the some of the struggle and strook P. C. Englay across the back with his stick, but then realgued himself to the inevitable, and submitted to arrest. This onded the light.

Proceedings by the police at the various consular courts took place next day, the cases being adjourned.

On Friday the Cuban Consul ordered Castanada to leave Shanghai within five days an a sentenos of five years' banishment, and the Consul gave instructions that all the roulette wheels and other paraphernalia seized at the Jessfield Inn were to be burnt, and an nounced that the sentence he had imposed wai for keeping a gambling house known as the Jessfield Inn, and for firing at the police in the execution of their duty.
