The earthquake which on Friday night, the 11th ult. visited in, its greatest intensity the Department of the Bouches-du-Rhône cased very great destruction of property and serious loss of life in several inland villages.
The Paris correspondent of the Times writes In the towns the more solid construction of the buildings has been able to resist the shock. The Department of the Bouches-du-Rhône, in which the cities and towns of Marseilles, Arles, Taras- con, and Aix-en-Provence are situated, is bounded on the marth by tho River Durance,
the weat by the Rhône and one of its arms, the Petit Rhône, on the south by the Mediterranean, and on the east by the Department of the Var. The physi. sal geography of the Department abons it to consist mostly of undulating plains, which fall away from the south-westerly spurs of the Alpe. The region mest soriously affected by the earthquake lies between Aix-en-Provence, a town of some 29,000 inhabitants about 20 north of Marseilles, and the River Darance, the northern boundary of the Department. The line of grantert destruction seems to ran in a north-westerly direction from Aiz through the villages of Saint Cannat (1,200 inhabitanta), Lambesc (2,400 inhabitants) and Rognen (1,600 inhabitants).
