An interesting description of the commercial high schools in Germany was given recently by Mr. T. Schlagiatweit, the German Consel in Manchester, at a meeting of the Chartered In stitute of Secretarios,

modest size and aspirations, and usually embrace two or three terms in winter. The "commercial high schools of an academió ́ character" are materially different.There are at present fire of these commercial universities in Germany- in Leipzig, Cologne, Frankfort-on-Main, Berlin, and Mannheim. In North Germany the towns of Konigsberg and Essen also intended to establish such special commercial training schools

For the present the Prussian anthorities bare refused to sanction them on the ground that of there was no gennine requirement for them, and consequently bodi Konigsberg and Esson continue to extend and improve their existing system of commercial courses Eason, familiar by its association with the famous Kropp works, can show a specially large and well-arranged programme. Breslau, in the cast, is also mentioned in connection with efforts in found ing a similar institution. As to South Germany, plans for the stablishment of commercial universities have been mooted in Munich and Nuremberg, but the well-known rivalry of recent years between these cities has not been helpfai to the objects in view. All five institutions have been founded since 1898.

Even sceptical men of business in- Germany now admit that the high schools are past the experimental stage, and will appreciate AN assistant trained at a commercial ligh school hocar display and being into harmony theoretical knowledge coupled with practical skill, bat opinions may differ whether it is to their advantage that the organisations are all based on different principles,

As time goes on it will be found that the academia training of a commercial high school not only makes young men of business valuable members of society, men and citizens, but also fits them for the trae performance of the loftiest tanks of the new contury and enables them to take part. every man according to his powers in the sointion of these great social, economis, and political problems of our age which every nation, worthy of a name, is striving to solve."

Shanghai Docks have improved considerably, the closing rate being buyers at Ts, 87. Hongkong and Kowloon Wharves have advanced to bayers at 555, after sales between $52 and $55. LANDS, HOTELS AND BUILDINGS,—Hong- kong Lands have advanced to buyers at $99, but no charas seen to be available at present: Kow- loon Lands are steady at 830, and West Pointa are firm at $44. Hongkong Hotels are quoted $85 cam new issue buyers, which is the equivalent of $71. for old or new lane, and 843) for the new issue alone (825 paid up). Humphreys Estates sold and have buyers at 89. Dairy Farms sold in a sinall way at $171, but shares are on offer now at $17. "Green Island Cement shares fetched $3.00 and $8.90, closing with sellers at latter figura.. Ices have been done at 815). Other stocks under this heading are unchanged and without any reported sales."

MISCELLANEOUS, Chin-Borneos, farther isales at 5.1.3) to $122, are wanted at $124. China Providents have sales and sellers at 891. Langkata have advanced in the next! to Tix 1070, Wateons sold and are offering at 29. In other stocks under this heading no transactions have been made public, and there is no change in rates to report.
