RANDOM REFLECTIONS.
Eastertide has come and gone, and few of us have cared to inquiro as to its origin. Enough for us that it brings a welcome holiday, and enough for us that the weather was all that could have been wished. The roligious aspect of Enster is not too pronounced in Hongkong, but we are not worse in that respect than the good folks at home, who are rapidly converting the great religious festival into a holiday. In that way England will be following the lead of Scotland which has practically abolished its old Blace fast days in favour of public holidays and takes practically no interest, religiously, i Christams.
LOCAL SPORT.
V.R.C, SPORTS.
The twelfth annual athletic moeting pro moted by the senior sporting organisation of the Colony took place on Saturday at the Happy Valley. The weather was all that could be desired and there was a large attendance, which included many ladies. The pleasure of the spectators was mush enhanced by the selections played during the afternoon by the Bajputs Band ander the leadership of Bandmaster Coke, The exhibition of sport was on the whole good, though it was perhaps to be regretted that the ranner Andrews frightened off competitors in the flat races. The meeting was under the management of the following officials:

Talking about Easter-curious association of deas-reminds me of fan tan at Macao. The Portuguese Settlement attracted a big crowd of visitors during the holidays, but though some of the visitors and "systoms" I haven't heard of any who emulated the man at Monte Carlo
and broke the bank.
A few days ago I road in the Press of a prospective rival to Macao. This was the border town of Samchun which, lying in Chinese territory, is regarded as likely to offer facilities for gambling which cannot be enjoyed under British jurisdiction. It is not at all likely that those who are keen on a flatter will take advant age of the opening of the railway to trip into China to gamble on "yat, yee, sam, axe," and many who couldnot afford the whole day necessary for the journey to Macao and back will be able to spars the few hours in which the rotura trip to the border can he sccomplished True, with the aid of the iron horse il might be that the British authorities will make representations to the Chinese Govern went which would put a stop to gambling in Sanchau, but I imagine if that were dous gambling institutions would quickly spring up in either of the cities further inland, either at Po Kak Hu or Long Kong.
While walking along Kennedy Road the other day I could not resist a smile when I read the notice apparently drafted by some "This path manet not be military genius, used by pedestrians."As the path confd of steps loading up the hillido, I wondered how horseman, oyclists or motorists were to nego tiate it. The ordinary way up the steps would be walking, but apparently that method of locomotion is debarred by the millitary authori ties who must have some other ideas as to how the ascent abould be made. Perhaps they have in view aeroplanës, ur balloons, or lodges.
From opon windows and wide verandalis the strident tones of the gramaphone han assailed our earg until we have come to regard this as an instrument of refined torture. It is par ticularly virulent in Hongkong, but wo are. fortunately spared the infliction of it in public life. In America they have introduced it into polities, and speeches are ground out to more or less admiring audiences; and now I see they have gone one better, er one worse, by utilising it at the graveside for the delivery of the

The meeting of the two Hongkong Club rivals during the week end was interesting inamuch as it was the deciding mater for the possession of the shiold in the League competition for this season. The teams were favoured with good weather on both days. On Friday "A" taum batted first, Anderson being the only batsman to reach double figures. From the commencement there was a regular processi

The total score for the A foam was 39. After the tex interval, Elborough and Moore faced the bowling of Fowler and Anderson. Notwithstanding several images in the bowling' the couple compiled the necessary mans before a soparation was effected, "II" team thus winning with tex wickets to spare.
