With silver the effect is different. A sheet 1/120,000 of an inch thick remains opaque in a reducing atmosphere-like hydrogen or coal-gas-or in a vagaum, but in air or one-fifth of an atmosphere of oxygen it becomes beautifully transparent in few minutos at 390 deg. The transparent silvor does not appear to be oxidized though oxygen Reems necessary to produce the change. A sheet of copper 1/75,000 of an inch thick becomes transparent in air or oxygen when heated to 200 degrees showing brilliant emerald-green transmitted light, which passes through olive and dark red to black as the temperature rises to 400 degrees. In this case oxidation is very ovident

For the energy of future ages the United States has its enormous water-power, and, as the cost diminishes, F. W. Ballard, addressing Ohio engineers, has suggested that a fuel supply may be developed from vegetation. The internal combustion is far more economical of fuel than the steam engine, 0.8 pint of alcobol in the former producing one brake horse-power hour. A bushel of corn yields 2,5 gallons of alcohol, while a bushel of white potatoes yields 0.8 gallon.

E. Hain(vice-president), Mr. Edward Pembroke, No. 55 & 57, Des Vour Road Central, for Mr. Oswald Sanderson, and Mr. C. W. Gordon. The President, in the course of his address, re- marked that, although his predecessors had now for several years back referred to the depression in the shipping industry, the year just past had been the worst ever experienced. Until trade expanded they could not hope for any improve ment in freights. He was afraid "this would take some time, for although they were helped. by the fact that a large amount of tonnage was laid up in various ports of the United Kingdom and abroad, variously estimated at frem one to one and a half or two million tons, any small rise
freights would almost certainly bring this tonnage into work again, and thus retard the oliance of any permanent revival taking place for some time.
