THE MINISTERING CHILDREN'S LEAGUE.

ADDRESS BY THE COUNTERA OF MEATH.

"No day without a deed to crown it," is the motto of the Ministering Children's League and the deed which crowned yesterday, and which will long be remembered by the children of Hongkong, was the interesting address given by the Countess of Meath, foundress and hon. central secretary of the League.

The express purpose for which this League

was founded was to teach the children of the rich to take an active interest in relieving the necessities of the poor.

Thoro was a large attendance, of ladies and children on the tennis court of St. Paul's Callege by the hour at which it announced that Her Ladyship was to speak te the children.

should have been here A

WYRA

Afternoon ton was nerved, and the prayer of the League was offered.

Her Ladyship then told the children that she was pleased to find herself in Hongkong. Not so long ago Mrs. May called to see her at home, and the Countess little thought then that she would have the plassure of seeing the children of Hongkong and kind Mrs. May in the place where that lady Lad been working so hard. She month earlier, but was glad of a delay which bad on- abled her to call at Japan and Shanghai, in both of which places excellent work had Her Ladyship been done by the League. continued in simple language, and with apt illustrations, to explain the objects of the Licaguo. She likened it to a young tree, the branches of which had extended north, south, east and west until brauchen had sprang up in different parts of Europe, Asia, Africa Americs and Australasia. She told of the pleasant homes of the League for the unfortunate, and took the opportunity of thanking the children present very much for their subscriptions. A little girl in Japan, said ber Ladyship, when asked what the League wak, said it was three and a half miles. She did not wish the children present to think that it zainistered only three and a half miles. It had to minister a great deal further; right round "Don't despise little the big, hig world. Deeds," said Lady Meath, "for you never know when a kind one bears fruit." When in Japan her Ladyship was very anxious to get hold of the English, French, German, Italian, American and any other children the League conld lay hold of with white faces. She found, however, that they were always coming and going to other places, and then she thought that it would be a She great point to start among the Japanese. was cheered to learn that there would be branches in Japan shortly. Not only were they going to start a branch in Shanghai also, for European and American children, but they had some hoje that in the course of time Chinese would be persanded to join their beautiful League, and help in making the world a little bit better and happier. In conclusion, her Ladyship reminded those present that when Mrs. May last went home farayeartha branch of the Ministering Children's League here practically disappeared. Shu trust. ed that such would not be the case again, und exhorted the children to carry on the charitable

work, nasuring them that their service would be

Interesting pictures of League homes were. then shown, while light refreshments were distributed.

NOTORIOUS LAWYERS'S DEATH IN NICE HOTEL.

Paris telegram reports that Abraham Hum- mal, who was formerly a New York lawyer, bas died at an hotel in Nice, where he had been staying for some months.

Abe Hummel, or" Little Abe," was for many years one of the most prominent figures on the right side of New York.

He had another weakness. I do not think that the word thrift existed in his vocabulary. No sooner did ho receive his wages which I paid him punctually on the first of every month, than be would find all sorts of ezeaser, stoop to every kind of subterfuge How he spent his money to get away.

He was a member of the firm of Howe and at gambling, on dusky maidens or in the coek pít, I am not aware, but he was chronically Hummel, the most famous criminal lawyers lu the States. On that occasion ho $4,000,000.00 alleged that he required the money to defray 12,000.00 the funeral expenses of his mother who had 81.350,79 just died. A week afterwards he esine to me 640,065.32 for another loan, and told me that his mother was very ill, and he had not the wherewithal to buy medicine for her.

It is not unlikely that a condition of affairs which existed prior to the taking over of Kowloon City may be repeated. Then launches used to run daily to Kowloon city and to other parts of the peningals but principally to the former place, where fairly large gembling houses were allowed to flourish. On Saturdays and Sundays the launches were invariably crowded by people eager to have a **flatter," and it became so noticeable that the Hongkong authorities made representations to the Chinese authorities to repress these houses This was done, but, as not infrequently happens, the ban was ignored occasionally and the evil developed again to its original extent when. representations, were again made and the housed wore again closed,

There can be little doubt that should the gambling houses be built at Samchan they will be largely patronised from Hongkong. TIBETAN GEOGRAPHICAL PROBLEMS.

At a meeting of Fellows of the Royal Geo- graphical Society, held in the Theatre, Burling ton-gardens, last month, a discussion on geogra phical problems concerned with Tibet was opened by Dr. Sven Hedin. Major Leonard Darwin, the president, who occupied the chair, said that Dr. Sven Hedin had written a paper which had been cireutated among certain experts, and he himself proposed to address members upon it.

Dr. ven Hedin spoke on various Boo graphical problems which had been raised in his paper, but dealt principally with the new mountain system to which he has
