HONGKONG JOCKEY CLUB,

ANNUAL RACE MEETING.

FIRST DAY.

Tuesday, February 16th. This the great sporting event of the year, was inaugurated yesterday under particularly happy auspices. The weather was fine, bright eunshine and warm breezes displacing the dall cloudy atmosphere of the morning and this contributed in no little degree to the pleasure of the day and to the opening success of the meeting. The interest in the races shows no waning and yesterday's attoudance was very large, demonstrating that the event is almost as Important a social gathering as it is a sports meeting

The improvements effected in the promises of the Jockey Club called for no little commen. dation. The grand stand fully deserves its appellation, a handsome flight of broad steps

A lavish display of bunting not only from the stande but from the booths gave a bright ap pearance to the picturesque and animated sceno. The Chinese, as usual, swarmed outside, close to the track, and crowds wore Bean perched on the Black Rock and other heights in the neigh- bourhood, while the throng within the enclosure included the local élite, His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Captisia Mitchell Taylor and Captain Simson, A.D..'s, and Miss Henniker, arriving shortly after the second race. The Lusitano and B.O.C. drew 3--3. The game was very good, although the Causeway Bay ground does not lend itself to an exhibition of good football.

The Buffe easily vanquished the R.A.M.C. by 6 clear goals. They have now scored 49 goals. and have only had two registered against them, The Buffs are very powerful and no team can now prevent their winning the Daily Press Cap while their possession of the Shield seems very probable. They always play the same team and the result is each player understands the other. If the Hongkong Club and Y.M.C.A. could manage this we might see the Bugis beaten. Good luck to the Buffs.
