THE FATE OF THE "WHANG HO.,
What has become of the notorious Chinese war junk. Whang Ho, which started on a has- ardous voyage from this port to New York early in the last January? The Whang Ho sailed from Papeete for New York March 8th, after having passed through many vicissitudes, and since then no word has been received of her.
The fantastic craft, says a San Francisco exchange, has been placed on the overdue list and quoted for reinsurance at 8 per cent, it being announced that she is ont 124 days from Papeete for Galveston.
The water-fronters who ventured ominous prophesies concerning the fate of the Whang Ho when she left here are muttering. “I told you so." Although the ancient craft had made the voyage from Yokohama to this port in safety, it was pointed out that she would never be able to weather the gales which blow off Cape Horn.
The Whang Ho was towed to sea on January 5th and her captain intended shaping her course for the Atlantic direct. But the vessel did not steer properly and it finally resched the South Ses island of Tahiti, where the crow promptly deserted and returned here on the steamer Mariposa last May.
Another crew, more venturesome, was secured and the Whang Ho was squared away on kar journey again. That was 124 days ago, and since then she has not been spoken. The Whang Ho was brought out from China in 1906 and was exhibited here as an ancient Chinese war junk, the relic of an old Celestial dynasty. The public did not take kindly to its alleged pedigree, and at last its adventurous owners decided to send her around the Horn to become A concession at Coney Island, N.Y.
