CIVIL SERVICE OPEN AIR CONCERT.

A very sucoonful open air concert was held on the grounds of the Civil Servios Cricket Club at Happy Valley on Saturday evening and was largely attended. A large enclosure was fenced off with bamboo matting, the surroundings being lighted up with a powerful are light the glare of which was mollowed by strings of Chinese lanterns which aireumferen- ced the enclosure. A maished stage, dressed with fags, was erected at one end of the enclosure. The promotera have every reason to be satisfied with the sucosas attending their offerte, and their only regret could have been the absence of His Excellency the Governor, who was unavoidably detained. The sky wae. overalt, and the weather threatening, bat fortunately the rain held off until the end of the proceedings. The first item on the programme was a selection from Faust by the Middlesex Band, after which Mr. F. A. Biden zang "Flight of Ages" in a manner. that found favour with his auditors. Later the same gentleman received another ovation for hin. singing of "Threo for Jack"-M-Titman's eboo' solo "Aris de Bravara" was executed with

considerable skill, and then the Hos. Mr F, H, May look the platform to tell some of his droll stories of Irish wit. Needless to say, the hon. gentleman kept his auditors in a simmer of mirth, the light laughter of the lady coupled with the hearty guffaw of the gentleman being a proolamation of the appreciation of Mr. May's humour. His second appearance before the audienor, when he gave numerous examples of She Irishbull,"incorporating a story about the domestic cat, was no less appreciated than the dret, and he retired from the platform followed by rounds of bearly applane, The comic element of the concork was in the cap. able hands of Mr. Hutchinson who, affer sing- ing a German parody on the song "Drinking," responded to an enpore with the good old Irish ballad "Tread on the fall of me cost" Later the same gentleman earned much applause for his singing of a comio song with a good rolliak- ing oborus in which bis kesters heartilly joined, As he left he stage there was an emphatic recall, and after obliging again he had perforee to return a third time to satisfy the demands of his hearers. Mr. J. H. Chalmers was deservedly applauded for his brilliant munion! skotoh, a performance which stamped him as a pianist of more than ordinary ability. Thanks are also

due to him for accompanying the other perfor- mers, and the Middlesex Band are likewina entitled to a word of praise for their selestions during the evening.
