AN EMPIRE FROM THE SWAMPS,

VREAT KECLAMATION PROJECTS IN THE UNITED STATES.

For two decades the United States Govern- ment has been engaged in a stupendous engineering enterprise for the reclamation of the Western arid regions through Irrigations, end in the various States millions of dollars have been invested irrigating canale and storage reservoirs,

...

This Fork has enlisted some of the best sugineering talent of the country, and it has been the means of making the desert veritably to blossom as the rose. Pud has converted land worth only a for dollers au spre into fertile fruit, grain and veget ble gardeus, valsed to day at several hundreil dollars per score.

Along the whole length of the Atlantic coast, and near the borders of many of the great rivers and lakes, there are nearly a hundred million of drainable swamp land which has received more or less serious consideration from the Government for the past half a century.

The United States Geological Survey has been making a careful study of this wat region for many years, and more than 400 topographic and hydrographic survey sheets have been made concerning the swamp areas.

adres

This survey of the wet lands has been the work of some fifteen years, and the final results of this great preliminary study are now likely to follow in the next dozen years, ...

SUCCESSFUL EXPÉRIMENTS,

As an illustration of what can be accomplish- ed, the office of experiment station has in the last two years prepared practical working aur veys and plans for draining the lands on the wont side of this Red River in North Dakota, at an estimated cost of £200,000.

The ares to be drained comprises some 1,555,000 acres, and has a total length of 162 miles with an average width of fifteen miles.

To reclaim and put this laad into commercial use, the cost thus avarages less than a dollar per aore and it is believed that the soil will be the. richest in the Stats and capable of remarkable wheat production.

The engineering experts who have investi. gatod swap lends in the United States estimate, writes Mr G. B. Walsh, in Cassier's Magazino, that there is an amount of avail- able wet soil that can be reclaimed cost to that of the arid regions, and that the coat will not Lonly be much cheaper than irrigation, but much more accessible to the great mass of population.

For the most part the great swamp belts are situated gas of the Rocky Mountains, sud there is hardly & State on the Atlantic border that bis vot a million or more acres of sucha AS SUPPLIED TO THE HOUSE OF Pet Roll within its territories,
